[Softball] No. 21 Grand View goes 1-1 in day one of Heart Conference Tournament play

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – No. 1 seed Grand View went 1-1 on day one of the 2017 Heart of America Athletic Conference Postseason Softball Tournament at Heritage Park. Grand View fell 2-1 to No.8-seed Culver-Stockton in their opener, but stayed alive with a 5-3 victory over six-time defending Heart of American Athletic Conference champion No. 5-seed Central Methodist University Eagles and moves on with a 40-12 record.

In game one, Grand View fell to No. 8-seed Culver-Stockton College 2-1. CS-C put two runs on the board in the top of the sixth to take the 2-1 lead and take the win over the Vikings. Grand View recorded seven hits with Devin Brown (SR/Indianola, Iowa) going 2-3. The Wildcats recorded five hits and committed one error. Libby Yenger (SO/Indianola, Iowa) struck out four batter, giving up one earned run.

The Vikings kept their appearance in the Heart Post Season Tournament alive with a defeat 5-3 over Central Methodist University Eagles. Both teams put up one run in the first inning with the game remaining tied 1-1 until the bottom of the fifth when the Vikings added two more runs to take a 3-1 lead. CMU responded with one run in the top of the seventh but GV put two more to seal the 5-3 win. The Vikings recorded 11 hits with Stanzy Snyder (JR/Johnston, IA) going 4-4 with three doubles and 2RBI. Kate Crow (JR/Ames, Iowa) also helped the Vikings offensively, going 2-3 with 2RBI. Claudia Farrell (JR/Des Moines, Iowa) recorded the win for the Vikings, striking out five batters, and allowing two earned runs off seven hits.

The tournament field, now narrowed from the original 10 down to six teams, will continue with the fourth round on Friday and will finish on Saturday.The Vikings are back in action tomorrow, May 5, at noon against No. 7-seed Baker University.
