Sports Briefs: Dominican softball rallies past Central Washington
Dominican University softball rallied for a 5-4 victory Central Washington in non-conference action Saturday, closing out the Stan State Invitational at Turlock.
Aneesa Brewer tied the game with a three-run shot over the left-field fence. One inning later, with runners on first and second, the Penguins’ Taylor Rodriguez laid down a bunt. Wildcats pitcher Alex Fohr tried to pick off the runner at third, but her throw sailed wide, allowing the winning run to score.
The Penguins (5-5) face Cal State Monterey Bay on Wednesday in Seaside.
Girls basketball
Drew Schultz scored a team-high 16 points to lead Redwood High to a 47-21 victory over Marin Catholic to capture the MCAL championship with an undefeated league record. Kitty White had 14 points and Brooke Denler added 12 points for the Giants (21-6). Cece Biernat led the Wildcats (11-13) with 11 points. Boys soccer

Girls soccer

College baseball
College of Marin went deep into its bullpen during a 13-inning marathon Saturday, before an RBI-double to right field off closer James Dole gave Santa Rosa an 8-7 victory over the Mariners.
Ben Sebastiani was 4-for-6 with a RBI double for the Mariners, who got a three-run homer from Patrick Kozielec, as Marin rallied for a 7-4 lead in the top of the fifth. The Bear Cubs scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game.
Reliever Blake Tipper entered in the seventh inning and held Santa Rosa scoreless on four hits, with two strikeouts through three innings of work, before handing the ball to Sam Schnitzer, who struck out two and walked two in two innings of one-hit ball.
Basketball
The Branson School and Bulls boys basketball head coach Demetrius Roquemore are hosting a Middle School Basketball Skills Clinic, Feb. 18-19, from 10 a.m. to noon. The clinic is open to boys and girls in grades 6-8. and focuses on foundational skill development, confidence-building, and basketball IQ. It’s led by Branson basketball coaches and players and is designed as a community resource for middle school athletes looking to grow their game. Youth sports
San Domenico boys basketball coach Tyler Gaffaney is launching “Bring Back Play”, a grass-roots push to keep pickup games and unstructured play a part of children’s lives. Gaffaney aims to launch Free Play Fridays in San Anselmo and Free Play Sundays in Novato in the Spring, hoping to offer unstructured activities for children in grades 4-8. Children who sign up at www.bringbackplay.org arrive for a 3-hour session of free play where they “run the show.”
