WBSC U-18 Women's Softball World Cup Finals 2025: Puerto Rico walk off Mexico; Japan win in five
Welcome to the Opening Day at the WBSC U-18 Women's Softball World Cup Finals 2025 at Devon Park in Oklahoma City, USA. All eight teams take the field today to play their first games in this competition, starting their quest for the title of World Champions. All games are available on the WBSC official streaming platform, GameTime.
Japan defeated Czechia, 9-2, in five innings at OGE Energy Field; and Puerto Rico walked off Mexico, 8-7, in a nine-inning thriller at Devon Park's Field 4.Today we will have six games at Devon Park, as well as the Opening Ceremony of the Finals.
Group B opened in the morning with two simultaneous games: Japan defeated Czechia, 9-2, in five innings at OGE Energy Field; and Puerto Rico walked off Mexico, 8-7, in a nine-inning thriller at Devon Park's Field 4.
Group A will follow with two games at 3:30 p.m. Field 4 will host Canada and Chinese Taipei; while the main stadium will stage China vs USA.
The Opening Ceremony is scheduled at 6:30 p.m. and after that, Day 1 will close with Czechia and Puerto Rico; and Chinese Taipei vs USA.
Mexico 7-8 Puerto Rico - Boxscore
A walk-off single by Sabrina Boyer in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted Puerto Rico to a thrilling 8-7 victory over Mexico in their opener in Oklahoma City. The Caribbean side took advantage of four defensive errors by Mexico, which resulted in five unearned runs and proved decisive in the Group B matchup. Mexico outhit their rivals 13-6.
Reliever Brooke Simmons earned the victory for Puerto Rico after throwing 2.2 innings. She allowed just one unearned run — the tie-break runner in the eighth — on one hit, striking out one and walking one. Lilianna Acosta was charged with the loss for Mexico.
