Mathieu van der Poel has been forced to abandon the 2025 Tour de France in its final week after being diagnosed with pneumonia.
The Alpecin-Deceuninck cyclist was showing symptoms of a “common cold” for a few days before his condition worsened on Monday, his team said.
“Medical tests revealed that Mathieu is suffering from pneumonia,” Alpecin-Deceuninck added in a statement.
“In consultation with the medical staff, it was decided that he can no longer continue the race. His health is the top priority, and rest and recovery are now essential.
