Scott's memorable day in Texas softball's big win
AUSTIN (KXAN) - Senior day is usually memorable for athletes. It certainly was for an all-time great Texas softball player in Mia Scott.
One of the best hitters in program history, Scott is an infielder by trade. But in the regular season finale Saturday at Red & Charline McCombs Field, the senior did more than her usual defensive duties.
In a blowout win over Kentucky 13-2 in five innings, the Longhorns set a lofty goal for Scott: to play all nine positions in the field.
Moving around the infield is one thing. The outfield is a different challenge but also reasonable. But as the game neared its inevitable end, Texas head coach Mike White put Scott in behind the plate as a catcher for her eighth position of the game.
"At the last minute they told me she's going to play every position," said White about the team. "That's the first I knew of it was the start of the game. They kind of do that stuff to me."
Then in the fifth inning with one out, Scott completed her historic day as she took the mound for the first time in her career. She retired a batter via a groundout and then surrendered a walk before Citlaly Gutierrez came in to shut the door.
"I thought the pitching was pretty awesome," said Longhorns infielder Joley Mitchell. "She gave up the walk but Mia's an athlete and I'm extremely proud of Mia."
Scott scored two runs in the win. Joley Mitchell led the way for the Longhorns with four RBIs. With the win, Texas finishes the regular season 45-9 and 16-8 in SEC play.
The Longhorns are the three seed in the SEC Tournament which starts Tuesday, May 6 in Athens, Georgia. Texas won't play their first game until Thursday.
