Sports Briefs: Redwood softball breaks out big bats against Napa

Ava Brown and Kait Christensen had four hits apiece as Redwood rolled to a 12-4 victory against Napa on Friday.

Christensen also drew a walk, drove in two runs, and scored three times. Gia Meyers had a home run among her three hits, driving in three and scoring twice.

The Giants (6-5) took a 3-0 lead through three innings, breaking open the game with three runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth.

• Eleanor Johnson had two hits, including a home run, as Terra Linda jumped all over Justin-Siena 13-3 in five innings on Friday. TL (8-0) scored five times in the first, three in the second, and five more in the third. Johnson drove in four runs and scored three times. Lacey Graham, Naomi Lewis, and Sofia Gonzalez also had two hits for TL.
• Bella Ferrity capped a four-run seventh inning with an inside-the-park home run as Marin Catholic posted an 8-3 victory over Sacred Heart Cathedral on Friday. Five different players had two hits apiece for MC (3-3) — Ferrity, Morgan Carlson, Anna Held, Grace Berringer, and Lana Wihlborg.
• Archie Williams conceded two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth as Monte Vista rallied for a 4-3 win on Friday. Paige Murphy had a hit, a walk, and scored twice for the Peregrine Falcons (6-2). Murphy pitched all seven innings with eight hits and one earned run against four strikeouts.
• Freshman pitcher Rory Brunetti had 12 strikeouts through five innings and Delaney Whaley hit a three-run homer as San Domenico beat Making Waves Academy, 19-5, on Friday. Whaley drove in seven runs during the day, as all 10 Panthers players scored.

Boys track and field

Junior Marco Cleary and senior Nate Beltran finished 1-2 in the 100 meter event, both with personal bests during Thursday’s tri-meet with San Rafael and Novato. Cleary’s 11.31-second finish edged Beltran (11.66) and Novato senior Nathan Matsumoto (11.99).

Host Redwood beat San Rafael, 98-16, and beat Novato 46-42. Novato beat San Rafael, 46-42.

Cleary (23.26) and Matsumoto (24.11) finished 1-2 in the 200, with San Rafael’s Teo Cristea (24.43) in third, all with personal bests. Cristea had enough in the tank to win the 400 in 54.10 seconds, just ahead of Redwood teammates Gabriel Cavanagh (54.44) and Finn Nelson (56.68).

Beltran won the long jump with a personal-best mark of 21-0.75, and was on the winning 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams with Cleary. Sophomores Dylan Schermerhorn and Mateo Ferst were also on the 100 relay team. Seniors Finn Nelson and Antonio Bayon rounded out the 400 relay team for the Giants.

Bayon won the pole vault with a personal-best 15-04.5, and was second in the shot put with a personal-best 43-8. Redwood teammate Holden Turner won the shot put with his own personal-best 52-05.75. Turner also won the discus (117-05)

Other event winners for the Giants included sophomore Cole Sandrich (800, 2:14.97), senior Nick Kemsley (1600, 4:45.08), junior Liam McCaw (3200, 10:31.07), sophomore Harry White (high jump), senior Anthony Pineda (triple jump).

Novato senior Benjamin DePalma was unchallenged as he won the 110 hurdles (18.35) and 300 hurdles (45.93).

• Tam High senior Nate Wanger won the 200 meter event just a split-second ahead of San Marin junior Leo Mattiuzzo during Thursday’s tri-meet with Marin Catholic in Novato. Wanger crossed the finish line in 23.02 seconds, with Mattiuzzo on his heels at 23.05. Mattiuzzo won the 100 (11.41). Tam scored 61 points to beat San Marin (47) and Marin Catholic (27). Tam senior Jack Turner set a personal best in the 400 (52.51). Tam teammates Finn Harrington and Marco Zink both PR’d as they finished 1-2 in the 800, separated by just over a second. The Red-tailed Hawks also got strong efforts in the 1600, where Caeden Gardner beat teammate Lucas Ruark for first place. Tam’s Gilby Fillat won the 3200 in a PR of 9:42.47. Marin Catholic junior Branson Choung won the 300 hurdles (45.72) and Tam’s Kiernan Connolly won the 110 hurdles (17.77). San Marin senior Trenton Jepma won the shot put (40’11.25”), discus (170’4”) and triple jump (41’6”), all personal bests. The Mustangs’ Cody Urban won the high jump (6’2”) and the long jump (21’1”), while Tam’s Vincent Porzio won the pole vault (10’9”).

Girls track and field

Redwood sophomores Julia Bayon and Annalise Horn, and junior Jaden Vangorder were all triple-winners as the Giants dominated Thursday’s tri-meet with Novato San Rafael.

Host Redwood beat San Rafael, 123-8, and beat Novato, 107-24. Novato outscored San Rafael, 40-24.

Bayon won the 100 (12.32 seconds) and 200 (25.39). Novato’s Juno Phipps was second in the 100 (13.54) and third in the 200 (27.94), behind runner-up Audrey Merk of San Rafael, who finished in 27.69 seconds.

Bayon was also on the Giants’ winning 4×100 relay team with Horn, Jenna Beauchamp and Drew Schultz. Vangorder  won the 400  in 1:04.53) and the 300 hurdles with a personal-best 51.13. Vangorder, with Allison Corvi, Dulce Valiente and Cara McKenna, won the 4×400 relay. Horn also won the long jump (18-2) and triple jump (33-10.5).

The Giants got wins from Kate Kozubik (800, 2:32.41), Sydney Middleton (1600, 5:22.35) and Marley Nacco (3200, 13:12.65), all personal bests. The Giants’ Scarlett Drucker won the shot put (25-05.5), while teammate Daika Dhaiti won the high jump (4-8). Redwood senior Skylar Bramiette won the pole vault (6-6).

Novato senior Emerson Erving won the 100 hurdles (18.46). The Hornets’ Audrey Kobayashi won the discus with a personal-best 102-01.

• San Marin’s Sicily Grasso and Marin Catholic’s Angelique Addae renewed their competitive rivalry Thursday during a tri-meet with Tam. Grasso won the 100 (12.49) and 200 (25.82), with Addae right behind her in both events. Addae, who finished second in the 100 (12.60) and 200 (27.53) was on both of the Wildcats’ winning relay teams. Tam’s Natalie Popper swept the hurdles events. Tam edged Marin Catholic, 58-53, with San Marin in third with 18 points.

Boys tennis

Branson’s Finn Higgins held tough at No. 2 singles to help secure a 7-0 sweep of Archie Williams on Friday. Higgins beat the Peregrine Falcons’ Porter Cook 6-1, 7-5. Chase Hoeveler won at No. 1 singles, while Griffin Cooper and Gian Carlo a Marck won the No. 3 and 4 matches, respectively.

• Redwood beat San Rafael, 6-1, with two wins by default on Friday. Lukas Berger gave the Giants a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles, and teammate Maddox Nguyen won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. The Bulldogs’ Ari Levine held off Everett Gross in three sets at No. 2 singles, the last match off the court.

Boys golf

Oskaras Valiauga shot a 42 at the Presidio Golf Club on Thursday to set a competitive pace for San Domenico during a 190-196 loss to Bay Counties League West rival Bay.

Boys volleyball

Zach Wulff had 24 kills and five aces, with four blocks and nine digs, to lead Archie Williams to a 3-1 victory over San Rafael on Thursday night. Skye Hermans and Duco Nieulant had four kills each, with Nieulant adding eight digs to his game. Max Brasler chipped in 30 assists for the Falcons.
