Stanford women’s softball upsets No. 1 Texas
No. 18 women’s softball (12-2, 0-0 ACC) defeated No. 1 UT Austin (15-1, 0-0 SEC) 9-5 on Friday in Tucson for the Hillenbrand Invitational.
The game marks their third win against a top-two ranked team in the past two years, having also won against No. 2 Tennessee and Texas in February of last year. This win is part of a strong season for the Cardinal – they are now 12-2, undefeated at home. In fact, their only losses were against the only other ranked team they played, No. 13 Arizona (15-2, 0-0 Big 12).
Only two players, juniors Kyra Chan and Emily Jones, hit homers during their Saturday matchup, and senior Allie Clements was the only homer in their matchup on Thursday.
Despite playing in a new location, the Stanford Stadium, while their new home is under construction, they continue off the momentum from their perfect opening weekend, hitting 27 home runs in the 12 games they played, as of the end of their matchup with Texas.
Freshman Zoe Prystajko threw her first no-hitter of the season in their 9-0 game against UC Davis (5-9, 0-0 Big West) last Thursday, the 35th in the program’s history. Sophomore Alyssa Houston set a new career high striking out seven batters in 6.1 innings of relief.
Clements hit two home runs, one of which was a two-run shot to put Stanford on the board and the other coming in her last at-bat. Freshman Joie Economides hit her fifth home run of the season in the sixth inning, second to only junior Taryn Kern. Junior River Mahler scored on one of Clements’ home runs and then hit a single in the sixth inning when the bases were loaded.
Next, the Cardinal will take on Georgia Tech (10-7, 0-0 ACC) in their next ACC matchup on Feb. 28 and March 1 in Georgia.
