No. 1 Texas softball run-rules 2 teams on opening day in Louisiana

AUSTIN (KXAN) — No. 1 Texas opened its 2025 season with a 2-game sweep, topping both Longwood and Louisiana 8-0 in mercy rule-shortened games Friday in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Catcher Reese Atwood smacked her first home run of the season against the Ragin' Cajuns, a 2-run towering shot over the left-field wall in the first inning. Texas plated four runs in the second inning via a 2-run double by Mia Scott and a 2-run single by Leighann Goode. Kayden Henry hit an RBI single and Kaydee Bennett scored on an error in the fourth.

Teagan Kavan earned the win in the circle for the Longhorns, allowing one hit with five strikeouts in four innings. Citlaly Gutierrez finished the game with a perfect fifth inning.

Atwood and Henry had two hits each to help Texas collect eight total.

Against Longwood, the Longhorns had 10 hits with Henry, Scott and Goode recording two each. Scott, Atwood and Bennett all hit RBI doubles in the game.

Mac Morgan pitched four innings, allowing three hits with two strikeouts and coaxing the Lancers into eight ground ball outs. Cambria Salmon struck out the side in the fifth to close the game.

Texas (2-0) plays another twin bill Saturday in Beaumont, taking on St. John's at noon and Lamar at 6 p.m.
