WBSC U-18 Women's Softball World Cup Group A - Day 4 Live Blog: Chinese Taipei sweep Opening Round. Czechia beat Brazil to advance to Play-Offs. Great Britain leading New Zealand
The last competition day at the Opening Round of the WBSC U-18 Women's Softball World Cup will define the last three guests to tomorrow's Play-Offs. With Chinese Taipei (4-0) already qualified for the Final, Czechia (2-1), Brazil (2-2), Great Britain (2-2) and New Zealand (1-2) will play today to stay alive in the tournament. One of them will be eliminated from the Play-Offs today.
Chinese Taipei and Czechia have secured their spot in the playoffs. The last two games of the Opening Round will see New Zealand facing Great Britain at 4pm and Colombia at 7pm. These games will define the other two qualified teams for the playoffs. All the games of the tournament are available on the WBSC streaming platform GameTime.

Chinese Taipei completed the sweep in the Opening Round with a 6-2 victory against Czechia and secured the first place in the standings. The Asians will play tomorrow the Final at 4pm and will have double chance to punch their ticket to next year's Finals.
The bottom of the fifth was the difference in the game. Four defensive errors by the European champions allowed Chinese Taipei to score five runs, getting a comfortable lead in the game.
Chinese Taipei starter Yi-Ting Chou was the winning pitcher, giving up four hits in 5.1 innings while striking out four. Her ERA is now 0.51 and is the leader of the competition. Lucie Vecerova, the losing pitcher for Czechia, is second in ERA with 2.33. She tossed four innings, giving up four runs (two earned) and five hits, with five strikeouts.
Nikola Skardova went the distance, striking out seven with three hits and one run allowed, to lead Czechia to a key win against Brazil, 5-1, and clinch a spot in the Play-Offs. Czechia closed the Opening Round with a 3-2 record and must wait for the last two games of the tournament to know their final position in the standings.
Kristyna El Ghannam had two RBIs going 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Amalie Kalcevova and Karolina Berankova also had two hits.
For Brazil, the losing pitcher was Maria Julia Pedroso who allowed five runs on eight hits and a walk, with three strikeouts.
New Zealand and Colombia will close the Opening Round in the last game of the day. Colombia is eliminated from the Play-Offs while New Zealand is closing their doubleheader with this game. They have played only once in the history of this competition, on 12 Agust 2015 in Oklahoma City. New Zealand defeated Colombia, 7-0, in five innings.

Top 4th - McKenzie Bailey-McDowell hit an RBI single to plate Angela Harrison. With the bases loaded Caitlin Henderson grounded to second base for the last out of the inning.
Bottom 3rd - Mia Krieger hit a leadoff homer and ignites a six-run rally for Great Britain, including a double by Cara Edwards, a single by Kaitlyn Parisi and a two-run singñe by Jenna Thompson. Great Britain come from behind and take an 8-6 lead.
Top 2nd - Kaiyah Ratu tripled with one out, and scored with a double by Maysen Kurene-Iwikau. She then scored with an RBI single by Penfield Starr. The game is 6-2 for New Zealand.
Bottom 1st - Great Britain scored two in the bottom half of the inning. A throwing error and a walk set the table for a two-run single by Mia Krueger. The game is now 4-2.
Top 1st - New Zealand scored big in their first at bat. A single and back to back hit by pitch loaded the bases for Maiarangi Waipara, who hit a double off the wall in center field to plate two. A pair of bases-loaded hit by pitch scored two more runs for New Zealand, which is winning 4-0.

A win for the European will put them in the top-four, while New Zealand, facing a doubleheader today, need to wait until the last game of the Opening Round to know their final position. Bottom 4th - With the bases loaded (Karolina Berankova and Amalie Kalcevova with a pair of singles and Julie Houbova hit by pitch), Kristyna El Gahnmam hit a grounder to second base misplayed by the defense, to score two more runs for Czechia. The game is now 5-1.
Bottom 3rd - Amalie Kalcevova singled to start the inning and advanced to third on a bunt and a long fly ball to left field. She then scored on a defensive error. Finally, Sara Rolfesova hit a double to make it 3-1.
Bottom 1st - After two quick outs, Czechia tied the game. A single by Kristyna El Ghannam kept the inning alive, and a run-scoring double by Iva Strakova made her score to tie the game at 1.
Top 1st - Brazil strike first. A pair of defensive errors allowed the hosts to score the first run of the game. Amanda Handa reached first on an error by third baseman Tereza Koubova, moved to second on a bunt, and scored on a throwing error by shortstop Iva Strakova. The game is 1-0.

Preview - The second game of the day will decide the fate of Brazil and Czechia in the tournament, with the winner of this game securing a spot in tomorrow's Play-Offs. They me for the las time in this competition on 15 August 2019 in Irvine, California, for the Placement Round of the competition. Czechia claimed the win over the South Americans 10-3 in six innings.

Top 7th - Emory Cheng takes the ball for Chinese Taipei. She issued a walk and served a hit to open the inning. Yi-Ting Chou re-enters the game, but an infield hit and an error allowed the two Czech runners to score. Yu-Huan Ke retired the last two outs of the game.
Bottom 5th - Chinese Taipei send nine batters to the box. Four errors and two hits allowed the Asians to score five runs. The game is now 6-0.
Bottom 3rd - Chinese Taipei take the lead. Wei-Chi Lin hit a lead-off triple. Lucie Vecerova struck out the next two batters, but then a wild pitch allowed Lin to score the first run of the game. Chinese Taipei is winning 1-0.

Chinese Taipei claimed a narrow 1-0 win over the European squad.
