Sports Briefs: Redwood clinches shot at MCAL softball title
Georgia Pineda pitched a complete game and had four hits at the plate to lead the top-seeded Redwood high softball team into Friday’s MCAL title game following a 6-1 home win against San Marin on Wednesday.
The Giants will renew their rivalry with No. 3 Marin Catholic in Friday’s 6:30 p.m. final at San Marin.
Pineda shook off a first-inning run by San Marin, allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out six and walking none. Pineda immediately helped her own cause with a two-run double in the bottom of the inning, scoring Addison Dunn and Kaela Sparler to give Redwood (17-4-1) the lead for good.
The Giants put together a three-run third inning to seize control of the game. Maddie Sofnas Sparler and Pineda led off the inning with back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases. Hailey Carlton singled to score two more runs and Gia Meyers added a sacrifice fly for a 5-1 lead.
Ashley Weingart had three hits for the Giants. Carlton had a pair of hits and drove in three runs.
San Marin (8-12) jumped out in front after Lauren Fong hit a leadoff single and Shelby Atkinson drove her in with a double. Pineda allowed just one hit the rest of the way.
Prep baseball
San Domenico secured its berth in the Bay Counties League West championship in thrilling fashion with Wednesday’s 7-6 semifinal win over host Stuart Hall at Big Rec field. The teams traded leads through the final three innings, with San Domenico scoring the winning run on a bases-loaded wild pitch to end the game.
The Panthers received solid hitting from Alex Tavano, Ozzie Shenk and Aiden Cohen.
The Panthers will play for the championship Friday at 3:30 p.m. against University at Paul Goode Field in San Francisco.
Boys volleyball
Archie Williams saw its season end at the North Coast Section Division III semifinal stage for the second season in a row, taking a set off defending champions Bishop O’Dowd before falling 25-17, 25-15, 23-25, 25-14.
“I am very proud of our effort and determination,” coach Greg Jones said via email. “Our boys gave it all they had and sometimes you just have to tip your hat to your opponent.”
Jones credited Zach Wulff, Will Gustafson and Alexander Lucich with solid games hitting, blocking and playing from the back row.

San Marin High linebacker and defensive end Wyatt Drenner has announced via Twitter his commitment to Lewis & Clark.
