Sports briefs: Marin Catholic holds off rival Redwood in softball

Gracyn Lovette had three hits and scored three runs as Marin Catholic held off a spirited Redwood rally for a 6-5 victory Thursday in a MCAL softball game that had been previously postponed due to the recent storms.

The top of MC’s lineup — Sammy Horn, Lovette, Lauren Osheroff and Lindsay Harrison — carried the day offensively, compiling eight hits, four RBIs and all six runs between them. Osheroff and Harrison had two RBIs apiece as MC (4-2, 1-2 MCAL) took a 6-1 lead into the seventh inning.

Redwood’s rally began with singles by Kaela Sparler and Stella Belluomini. Ava Brown walked to load the bases with one out then Gia Meyers hit an RBI groundout to make it 6-2.

Ashley Weingart singled and Addison Dunn reached on an error as Redwood climbed to within 6-5. MC’s starting pitcher Lily Cox got the final out, stranding the tying run on third base. Cox went all seven innings, allowing seven hits and four earned runs.

Weingart had a big day at the top of the order for Redwood (5-3-1, 3-1), with three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Prep baseball

A big first inning propelled Redwood to a 10-2 victory over San Rafael on Thursday, moving Giants head coach Mike Firenzi to the brink of a career milestone. Firenzi is one win shy of No. 500, as the Giants square off with the Bulldogs again on Friday.

Redwood (9-1, 5-0) touched San Rafael for four runs in the first inning on its way to an 8-0 lead through three innings.

Sophomores Dexter Jackson, CJ Harter and Dylan Thorpe each had hits for the young Bulldogs.

• Tyler Buxton rang up nine strikeouts in six innings as Tam defeated Northgate of Walnut Creek, 7-2, in a non-league game Thursday. Buxton allowed four hits and walked two batters. The Red-tailed Hawks’ Colin Lam was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, while Miles Gensler also had two hits.

College basketball

Redwood High grad Kylie Horstmeyer was limited to two points as San Diego fell to Oregon, 81-61, Thursday in the Women’s NIT Sweet 16.

Horstmeyer was named the MCAL Player of the Year during her senior season at Redwood High in 2020. Horstmeyer scored 19.8 points per game and averaged 11.7 rebounds to lead the Giants to a 24-5 record and an MCAL championship.

• A watch party is scheduled for Friday at the Marin City Rec Center to celebrate native son Darrion Trammell as he and his San Diego State teammates take on Alabama in the NCAA Sweet 16. Tipoff is at 3:30 p.m., with the game broadcast on TBS.

Girls lacrosse

The Branson School rallied past Novato for a 13-10 victory Thursday. The Bulls stormed ahead from a 6-2 deficit to take a 8-7 lead in the closing minute of the first half. Audrey Sullivan led the Bulls with six goals and three assists. Novato junior Stella Pardi had five goals and two assists.

Boys volleyball

Novato High got some key efforts in a 3-2 victory over Terra Linda on Thursday. Camden Franjieh nailed 29 Kills and eight aces for the Hornets in a 25-17, 13-25, 25-20, 22-25, 13-15 win. JJ Hollingsworth-Oram added four aces.

Boys tennis

Diego Castillo and Charlie Dunn won their singles matches in super-tiebreakers to lead Tam to a 7-0 sweep of San Marin on Thursday.

• Marin Catholic twins David and Will Shepard defeated Archie Williams twins Fin and Two Donnelly in a super-tiebreaker at No. 3 doubles to help the Wildcats clinch a 5-2 victory over the Peregrin Falcons on Thursday. jack Millar and Qas Vidyarthi won singles matches for the Wildcats, who swept doubles play.

Golf

Marin Academy enjoyed a break in the weather for a 172-215 victory over rival San Domenico at Peacock Gap on Thursday.  Charlie Wilhelm led the Wildcats (3-0) with a 2-over 38 and Charlie Hansen posted a 39. Henry Huffer led the Panthers with a 45.

• The Mustangs’ Darius Kellogg shot a 39 as San Marin topped Archie Williams, 222-247, Wednesday.

• Martha Kelly of Ross had a hole in one Thursday at Meadow Club. She reportedly used a pitching wedge on the 11th hole from 96 yards.
