Sports Briefs: Marin Catholic softball wins cliffhanger against Amador Valley

The Marin Catholic softball team scored six runs in the fifth then needed to score two more in the bottom of the sixth to retake the lead and hold on for a 9-8 win against Amador Valley at Dominican University on Wednesday.

Anya Jaroszewski hit a double to tie the game at 8-8 before freshman Anna Held drove in the winning run on a double play.

Grace Berringer hit a bases-clearing triple to put MC ahead 7-3 in the fifth inning. Selena Pena knocked in a pair of runs earlier in the frame with a double. Amador Valley scored five times in the top of the sixth to take an 8-7 lead.

Leadoff hitter Sammy Horn and Jaroszewski had three hits apiece for the Wildcats (3-0).

• Novato’s Allie Tubach powered up with four hits, including two doubles, as the Hornets defeated St. Patrick-St. Vincent of Valley, 14-7, on Wednesday. Tubach scored four runs. Giselle Flores was 3-for-5 with a double and Franseccsca Calle added two hits. Brooke Younkin threw a complete game with five strikeouts for the win.

• San Rafael pitcher Thomara Drummer limited Cardinal Newman to two hits over six innings but the Cardinals scratched out just enough offense to walk off with a 2-1 victory on Wednesday. The Bulldogs (0-2) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Sophia Everett singled, took second on a passed ball then came around to score on a single by Megam Murphy. Cardinal Newman tied the game on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth then won the game on a walk, an error and a single in the bottom of the sixth. Murphy and Angel Amesa had two hits apiece for the Bulldogs.

• Novato scored six runs in the top of the seventh to finally put away St. Patrick-St. Vincent 14-7 on Wednesday. The Hornets (2-2) took the lead for good with a three-run fifth inning and held an 8-7 lead heading into the top of the seventh.

• Archie Williams was limited to a pair of hits in a 9-0 loss to Sonoma Valley. Annabelle Freed and Amelia Richer had the hits for the Peregrine Falcons (0-3). Richer’s hit was a triple.

• Redwood (1-2-1) built up a five-run lead but saw it evaporate as Petaluma rallied for six runs in the top of the seventh inning to come away with a 7-5 victory.

Prep baseball

Kaiden Dossa hammered out a double and a home run as Tam High defeated San Rafael, 10-1, on Wednesday. Cooper Lift doubled twice for the Red-tailed Hawks 94-0), who are scheduled to take on Maria Carrillo on Saturday.

• Griff Vorhaus’ RBI-single gave Novato the lead in the eighth inning and the Hornets went on to defeat Archie Williams, 7-5, Wednesday. The game was tied at four in the top of the eighth when Vorhaus sparked a three-run rally. Vorhaus and Andy Gates each finished with two hits for Novato. Senior Charlie Scola and freshman August Block each had two hits for Archie Williams.

College baseball

Jake Ferguson was 4-for-5 with three RBI as part of a big day to help power COllege of Marin to a 19-4 victory over Napa on Wednesday. Ferguson pounded out a double and a triple. Jacob Campbell tripled and drove in three runs for Marin.

Joey Taddie and Steven Elsner each doubled and drove in three runs, while Jacob Anteneh doubled and drove in two runs. Miguel Bedard had a double and an RBI for Marin.

Jake Tirk picked up his first win of the season as he struck out eight batters, walked one and held Napa to just one hit across five innings.

Boys golf

Terra Linda High edged host San Marin, 210-220, at the par 36 Indian Valley course on Wednesday, getting the match in just before the expected rainstorm this week. The Trojans’ Sean Madden was the low medalist with a 3-over par 39, followed by Derek Newhall and Kyle Martin, both at 40. The win boosts Terra Linda’s record to 3-2.

Darius Kellogg paced the Mustangs with a 40, while Noah Duncan came around at 41.

• Marin Academy won its first match of the season, outshooting Drew 191-235 at the par 36 Presidio Golf Course. Charlie Hansen led the Wildcats with a 4-over 40.

Boys tennis

Marin Catholic’s Jack Millar and Qas Vidyarthi swept their singles matches at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, to help lift the Wildcats to a 6-1 victory over San Marin at the Bay Club in Ross Valley. Marin Catholic’s Felix Adam earned a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles.

San Marin’s Jesse Chi held off Andrew Gorczycki 7-5, 7-6 )3) at No. 1 singles for the Mustangs’ only win of the day.

• Branson’s Max Goldman and Pete Stovell earned a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles to clinch a 5-2 victory over host Tam on Tuesday. The Bulls swept doubles competition, and Tommie Higgins and Chase Hoeveler earned wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles to help carry the day for Branson. Tam’s Witt and Luke Bulger won at No. 1 and No. 4 singles.

• Redwood swept doubles play, and Mateo Cubillos, Hayden Gerber and Marco Lombardo scored singles wins as the Giants defeated Novato, 6-1, on Wednesday. Indie Stanic edged the GIants’ Tito Adams at No. 3 singles for the Hornets’ lone win.

• Novato fought through some close matches for a 6-1 victory over San Rafael on Tuesday. The Hornets’ Loic Foisy held off Forrest Reilly 5-7, 7-6, 1-0 (10-6) at the top of the singles ladder. Novato’s Matthew Moyer edged Luce Caviness 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4) at No. 2 singles. The Hornets’ top doubles pair of Cesar Martinez-Lopez and Shawn Kim earned a 6-0, 7-6 victory. San Rafael’s only win came at No. 3 doubles with Max Schrayer and James Ward.
