Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles Softball Travels to Miami University-Middletown

Middletown, OH: The Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles (13-27) journeyed to the Buckeye state on April 20th for a doubleheader with the Miami University-Middletown Thunderhawks (6-1). The Kentucky squad would drop two nail-biters.

GAME ONE
MM-2; Alice Lloyd-1

The Caney Creek Club fell in the opener despite allowing only 3 hits.

Both squads lined singles in the opening inning but did not produce any runs. In the third, the hosts smacked 2 doubles and took a 2-0 lead.

ALC threatened in both the fourth and fifth as they put 2 runners on base in each inning. Unfortunately, the rally’s fizzled out both times.

Things remained unchanged until the ALC seventh. In that inning, 1 single and 2 critical Thunderhawk errors permitted a run to score (2-1) and placed two more on base with just one out. Unfortunately, the next two batters failed to hit safely, handing the win to Miami.

The Lady Eagles managed 5 singles on the day and won the hitting battle, 5-3.

Pitcher Maleigh McDaniel deserved a much better fate on the mound, as she allowed only 3 hits over five innings. She permitted just 2 runs and struck out 9 batters. Haley Howell tossed the final inning, allowing no hits.

GAME TWO
MM-8; Alice Lloyd-7

The Ohio ladies won with an extra-inning, walk-off run, to earn the sweep.

The Caney Creek club bounced back by denting the scoreboard first. In inning two, they used an error to advance Abagail Stambaugh (RF). A pop fly then brought her around to score (1-0).

In the fourth, 3 nice singles would help pad the lead as 2 more runs crossed home plate (3-0).

Unfortunately, Miami would respond in the bottom of the inning, as a home run and 3 big doubles led to a windfall of 5 runs (5-3). One inning later, another blast gave them an insurance run (6-3).

In the seventh inning, the Lady Eagles would get 3 clutch singles, plus a huge double from Stambaugh. This would enable them to plate 4 important runs and regain the upper hand (7-6).

The Thunderhawks quickly responded as a double and error drove in the tying run (7-7) and placed two speedsters on base. Fortunately, ALC pitcher McDaniel promptly struck out the next 3 batters, and the contest entered extra-innings.

In extra innings, each club gets to start with a runner on second base, and the Pippa Passes squad saw Ellie Keene (C) promptly steal third. However, with two down, she was thrown out trying to break the tie.

 Then in the bottom half, MM bunted a runner to third and then produced a single to score the game-winner.

For ALC, Stambaugh and Baylie Compton (SS) both smacked 2 hits while McDaniel and Lyndsey Adkins (1B) each registered 2 RBI’S.

Pitcher Carley Creech started and went three innings. She gave up 5 hits and 3 earned runs, with 2 strikeouts. Kursten Napier, Mackenzie Brewer, McDaniel, and Howell all threw in relief.

The hosts led in hits (10-9). MM committed one 1error, compared to the Lady Eagles 2.
