[Softball] Downard Strikes Out 11; Softball Splits with Jimmies

Doane Softball traveled to Aberdeen, S.D., to meet up with Jamestown for a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The first game of the day was halted minutes in due to lightning but would resume after a short delay and the Jimmies would post a 3-1 win. Doane bounced back in game two with a 5-1 victory to earn the split.

Jamestown scored twice in the 1st inning on a pair of RBI-singles. Doane cut into the lead in the 2nd inning with an RBI-single from Jayden Young (SO/Iowa City, Iowa) to drive in Jadyn Hunt (SO/Elkhorn, Neb.). In the 4th inning, Jamestown scored the final run of the game on an RBI-single.

Emily Haines (SO/Folsom, Calif.) threw 6.0 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with one strikeout. Offensively, the Tigers were limited to three hits.

In game two, the Tigers scored runs in each of the opening three innings. In the 1st inning with runners at the corners, Haley Kennedy (SR/Lincoln, Neb.) stole second base. On the throw down, the ball went into center field and Alicia Vint (JR/Onalaska, Wash.) came in to score on the error. 

Doane added two runs in the 2nd inning to take a 3-0 lead. Angelina Esqueda (SO/Las Vegas, Nev.) singled to bring in Young for the first run. The second run scored on a throwing error as Jamestown tried to throw behind Payton Cooley (SO/Omaha, Neb.) at third base and the errant throw plated Cooley.

The Tigers added to their lead with a sacrifice fly by Anna Prauner (FR/Fremont, Neb.) in the 3rd inning to score Kennedy. Prauner doubled in the 5th inning to plate Shelby Downard (JR/Marysville, Kan.) for the final Doane run.

Downard started in the circle for Doane and went 7.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits with 11 strikeouts. Jamestown's only run of the game came in the final inning where they collected two of their hits.

Kennedy was 3-for-4 to lead Doane to a 12-hit game. Vint, Prauner, and Young had two hits apiece as well.
