[Softball] Softball Splits at Dakota Wesleyan

Doane Softball traveled to Mitchell, S.D., on Friday to take on Dakota Wesleyan in this year's edition of the GPAC Battle of the Tigers. DWU took the opener, 2-0, with Doane taking game two, 5-3.

In the opener, DWU took the lead in the 3rd inning on a solo home run. In the 4th, they added a run on an error. Doane out-hit DWU in the game, 3-2. Haley Kennedy (SR/Lincoln, Neb.) finished 2-for-3 for the Tigers. Shelby Downard (JR/Marysville, Kan.) started in the circle and threw 6.0 innings, allowing one earned run while striking out four.

In game two, Doane took the lead in the 3rd inning with an unearned run crossing the plate. DWU tied the game in the 4th inning on a solo home run. Doane came back in the 5th inning as they plated four runs to regain the lead. The big hit came from Megan Elliott (SO/Simi Valley, Calif.) as she delivered a three-run home run to break the tie. Jaydn Hunt added an RBI-double in the inning to extend the lead.

Dakota Wesleyan cut into the lead with a run in the 6th and one in the 7th but stranded the bases loaded as the game came to an end.

Emily Haines (SO/Folsom, Calif.) picked up the win as she went 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts. Downard picked up the save as she collected the final two outs with a foul out and a strikeout.

Offensively, Doane finished with eight hits in the game, two apiece from Downard and Anna Prauner (FR/Fremont, Neb.). Alicia Vint (JR/Onalaska, Wash.) led the team with two runs scored and Elliott drove in three.
