[Softball] Surging Softball Falcons take two from York

0 2

WICHITA, Kan. – The Friends University Falcons swept the York College Panthers for their seventh wins in their past eight contests today (Apr. 12) at Two Rivers Youth Complex.

The Falcons are now 20-17 overall and sit in fifth place in the KCAC with an 11-7 conference record.

"Things are finally clicking for this team!" said Friends softball head coach Suzanne Unruh. "Everyone is playing for each other and great things are happening because of it!"

Meghan Low (SR/Collinsville, Okla.) and Priscilla Mora (FR/Beaumont, Calif. ) provided the offense in the 8-0 first game victory for the Falcons.  Low was a perfect 3-of-3 at the plate with an RBI, with Mora getting two hits and driving in three.

The duo teamed up in the first inning, as Mora singled home Low before scoring on a double by Jennifer Garcia (SO/Sylamar, Calif. ).

The Falcons then exploded for four runs in the third, getting a two-run double by Mora and two more runs on Laila Spracklen (JR/San Diego, Calif. )'s eighth homer of the season.

An RBI double by Low in the fourth helped the Falcons finish the win on the run rule.

Spracklen, winner of the past two KCAC Player of the Week nods, was her normal dominant self in the circle, finishing with a career-high tying 11 strikeouts while giving up just two hits in five shutout frames.

Aleigha Gale (SO/Winfield, Kan. ) and Jayden Estabrook (FR/Tracy, Calif. ) each scored a run in the first game victory for the Falcons.

It was Vanessa Sigala (SO/Carson, Calif. ) fueling the offensive attack in the nightcap with a two-run single to cap a three-run first inning for the Falcons.

Carolyn Dallimore (JR/Patterson, Calif. ) then scored on a passed ball in the fourth to give the Falcons all the runs they'd need and more behind the pitching duo of Isabelle Schwien (SO/Denver, Colo. ) and Spracklen.

Schwien blanked the Panthers (11-27, 7-11 KCAC) with two strikeouts and scattered six hits across her five shutout innings. Spracklen came on for the final two frames and fanned five more hitters to give her a KCAC-leading 165 strikeouts on the season.

Sigala and Dallimore each finished with a pair of hits in the second game for the Falcons.

"I believe our defense can keep us in every game we play and when we add timely hitting to that, the sky's the limit with this group," said Unruh.

Next up for the Falcons will be a Senior Day matchup with Bethany College Saturday afternoon (Apr. 16) starting at 1 pm at Two Rivers Youth Complex.
