[Softball] Softball Drops Two in Seward

0 121

Doane Softball traveled to Seward on Tuesday to take on Concordia in a doubleheader. The Bulldogs were able to come away with the sweep, taking game one, 6-1, and game two, 13-5. The scores were deceiving in how close the games were.

In the opener, one inning proved to be the difference between the two teams. The Bulldogs plated six runs on two hits and four walks, capped by a grand slam, to take a 6-0 lead in the 3rd inning. They added another hit in the inning but the runner would be stranded. The 3rd inning would be the only inning Concordia would collect a hit in the game.

Doane scored their only run in the 6th inning as Jadyn Hunt (SO/Elkhorn, Neb.) singled to plate Haley Kennedy (SR/Lincoln, Neb.). The Tigers out-hit the Bulldogs, 6-3, in the game with Kennedy collecting two hits.

Shelby Downard (JR/Marysville, Kan.) drew the start and threw 6.0 innings, allowing six runs on three hits and six walks while striking out six.

In game two, Doane jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with three runs in the 1st inning. Megan Elliott (SO/Simi Valley, Calif.) drove in the first run with a ground out. Hunt followed with a RBI-double and scored on a RBI-single by Downard.

Concordia came back with a run in the bottom of the 1st and then took the lead with three runs in the 2nd inning. They added single runs in the 4th and 5th innings to take a 6-3 lead.

In the 6th inning, Doane scored two runs to pull within a run. Jayden Young (SO/Iowa City, Iowa) drove in the first run of the inning for the Tigers with a ground out with Alicia Vint (JR/Onalaska, Wash.) pulling Doane within a run on a RBI-single. In the bottom of the 6th, Concordia plated seven runs on three hits, three hit batters, two walks, and an error, to end the game early.

Concordia out-hit the Tigers, 12-10, in the second game. Vint led the Tigers with three hits while Angelina Esqueda (SO/Las Vegas, Nev.) and Downard had two hits apiece.

Emily Haines (SO/Folsom, Calif.) started for the Tigers and went 5.1 innings, allowing 10 runs (nine earned) on 11 hits with three strikeouts while Sarah Theiler (SO/Arlington, Neb.) allowed three runs on one hit in 0.1 innings of work.
