Sophia Bertorelli blanks Peru, gives Colombia first-ever win at WBSC U-18 Women’s Softball World Cup
Sophia Bertorelli pitched a gem this Wednesday to give Colombia a historic win over Peru, 2-0, in the last game of day 3 at the WBSC U-18 Women’s Softball World Cup. Colombia’s two runs were scored in the first inning.
Bertorelli was brilliant, as the 14-year-old right hander used 95 pitches to complete the shutout, with six strikeouts, while allowing four hits.
Shayera McDaniel produced the two runs of the game. With runners on first and second, the Colombian catcher singled up the middle to bring in Amanda Polo and Ericka Gomez. It was the second of only four hits in the game for Colombia.
Maria Pizarro pitched well for the host team, striking out seven in six innings.
This was Colombia’s first win in a youth women’s softball World Cup. Their only previous participation was in Oklahoma City 2015, losing all six games.
