[Softball] Unruh named Friends University Senior Women's Leader

0 9

WICHITA, Kan. – Friends University softball head coach Suzanne Unruh has added another title to her role on campus as she has been named the new Senior Women's Leader (SWL) for the athletic department.

"Suzanne has made a tremendous impact on our softball program and our campus community since arriving three years ago," said Dr. Amy Bragg Carey, Friends University President. "I'm confident she will bring leadership to this new role and continue to elevate our initiative of providing Falcon women with significant representation in athletics."

The SWL role ensures women receive meaningful representation in the leadership and management of intercollegiate sports on NAIA campuses.

"I am excited Suzanne agreed to take on this additional role," said Dr. Rob Ramseyer, Friends University Associate VP of Athletics.  "In her first few months as our Senior Women's Leader, she has been a resource to many and a valuable voice on our athletic leadership team.  Our athletic department and University are better now that she is in this role."

According to the NAIA, Unruh's responsibilities with this new SWL role will include, but are not limited to the following:

a) Communicate regularly with the athletics director, not only for leadership development, but also to consult on major departmental and university initiatives;

b) Participate in providing leadership and guidance in the area of Title IX and gender equity planning for the overall department, to include both men's and women's sports;

c) Assist the athletics director and senior management with strategic planning processes and decision making for the athletics department;

d) Participate in budget development and major financial decisions for the athletics department operations and initiatives; and

e) Advocate for student-athlete well-being while also serving as a mentor and resource for direct reports and other athletics staff members.

"I am absolutely thrilled to represent Friends University in this role in such an important time for women in sports!" said Unruh. "To be able to inspire and motivate positive leadership on our campus is going to be a blessing."

Unruh found success immediately upon taking the helm of the Falcon softball program in 2019, guiding the program to a KCAC tournament championship along with an NAIA tournament berth. For Unruh, it was her second straight conference tournament title, as she also led Tabor College to both the KCAC regular season and tournament championship in the 2018 season prior to arriving at Friends.

Following a COVID-shortened 2020 campaign, Unruh and the Falcons recorded a top-three KCAC finish with an overall record of 31-16 that included winning 14 of their final 19 games this past season.
