Olympic softball stars to play in 2021 Athlete Unlimited season
A total of 22 Olympic softball players, including 12 Tokyo 2020 medallists, will be on team rosters for the 2021 Athlete Unlimited season, to be played from 28 August to 27 September at Parkway Bank Sports Complex in Rosemont, Illinois. Athletes Unlimited announced the 60-softballer list that will participate in the 30-game season.
USA Tokyo 2020 silver medallists Ali Aguilar, Amanda Chidester, Haylie McCleney, Michelle Moultrie, Dejah Mulipola, Aubree Munro, Cat Osterman, Janie Reed and Kelsey Stewart will play the one-month long season, joined by Canadians Sara Groenewegen, Kelsey Harshman and Victoria Hayward, recent Olympic bronze medal winners.
Tokyo 2020 Olympians Taylor McQuillin, Danielle O’Toole, Sashel Palacios, Sydney Romero, Amanda Sanchez, Anissa Urtez and Tori Vidales, who all represented Mexico; Greta Cecchetti and Erika PIancastelli who played for Italy, will also be part of the second season. Netherlands’ veteran Britt Vonk, who played with the orange team at Beijing 2008, completes the list of Olympians.
The Athletes Unlimited competition format is centred on a player’s performance, not the teams. During the games, players get points for “winning” each inning, and also for each of their individual statistics. Osterman earned the most individual points among the elite players and was crowned champion of the Athletes Unlimited first season.
All 30 Athletes Unlimited softball games will broadcast or stream in both English and Spanish around the world through CBS Sports Network, FOX Sports, FOX Deportes, Facebook and YouTube.
