[Softball] Softball Drops Two to NAIA Powerhouse Squads
On Friday, Doane Softball competed in the first day of the Northeastern State Classic in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. The Tigers fell to Central Methodist, 11-1, in game one and to No. 16 Central Baptist, 5-1, in game two.
Game One - Central Methodist, L 11-1
The game was scoreless and hitless through the first inning and a half. The Eagles snuck in a run in the bottom of the second then another 10 runs in the third. In the fourth inning, Kailyn Wiseman (JR/Sutton, Neb.) walked, advanced to second on a hit batter, and was brought home on a Megan Elliott (FR/Simi Valley, Calif.) single. The hit broke up the no-hit bid for CMU and was the only hit for the Tigers in the game.
In the circle, Shelby Downard (SO/Marysville, Kan.) allowed 11 runs on 11 hits and four walks in 2.2 innings. Cecily Kaluza (JR/Vallejo, Calif.) allowed one hit while recording two strikeouts in 1.1 innings. Central Methodist remained undefeated on the season with the win.
Game Two - No. 16 Central Baptist, L 5-1
Central Baptist out-hit the Tigers in the game, 9-7, and scored four runs before the Tigers were able to cross the plate. The Mustangs scored two in the first inning on one hit and one Doane error. They added a run in the second and one in the fourth. Doane's run came in the fifth inning as Jadyn Hunt (FR/Elkhorn, Neb.) scored on a Jade Hill (FR/San Diego, Calif.)-infield single. CBU closed out the scoring with a run in the sixth.
In the circle, Josie Schnakenberg (JR/Wahoo, Neb.) allowed five runs, three earned, on nine hits and three walks with three strikeouts in six innings. Emily Haines (FR/Folsom, Calif.) faced three batters in the final inning, striking out one. Offensively, Angelina Esqueda (FR/Las Vegas, Nev.) and Hunt were 2-of-3 at the plate.
