[Softball] Home Runs Down Softball to Close Road Trip
Softball closed out play at the Northeastern State Classic Saturday morning in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. In game one, Doane fell to Northeastern State, 9-1. The Tigers faced Missouri Valley in game two, falling to the Vikings, 12-3. Doane's record stands at 6-6 on the season after the weekend.
Game One - Northeastern State, L 9-1
The River Hawks jumped to an early lead with one run in the first inning and six runs in the second inning. Doane made it on the board in the fourth inning when Haley Kennedy (JR/Lincoln, Neb.) scored on Jayden Young (FR/Iowa City, Iowa)'s double down the right field line. Northeastern finished the game with one run in the fourth and one in the fifth.
Josie Schnakenberg (JR/Wahoo, Neb.) pitched 1.0-plus innings, allowing four runs on four hits and one walk. Emily Haines (FR/Folsom, Calif.) threw 1.0 innings, allowing three runs on two hits and three walks. Shelby Downard (SO/Marysville, Kan.) finished the final 2.1 innings for the Tigers, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Offensively, Jayden Young, Alicia Vint (SO/Onalaska, Wash.), and Downard recorded a hit apiece for the Tigers.
Game Two - Missouri Valley, L 12-3
Missouri Valley recorded a solo home run in the top of the first and would finish the game with six on their way to the victory. Doane bounced back with one run on three hits in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game, 1-1. After a couple of scoreless innings, the Vikings' homerun swing came around as they hit four in the fourth and scored nine runs.
The Tigers came back with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Megan Elliott (FR/Simi Valley, Calif.) plated the Tigers' fourth inning run on an RBI-double. The team's final run came on an RBI-single Angelina Esqueda (FR/Las Vegas, Nev.). The Vikings closed out the scoring in the seventh on a two-run homer.
In the circle, Ashley Jacobson (JR/Omaha, Neb.) allowed four runs on four hits and two walks in 3.0 innings. Cecily Kaluza (JR/Vallejo, Calif.) also stepped into the circle allowing five runs on four hits. Shelby Downard finished the final 4.0 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
Offensively, Doane notched 11 hits in the game. Jade Hill (FR/San Diego, Calif.), Kayla Miller (FR/Yuciapa, Cali.), Esqueda, and Elliott recorded two hits apiece. As a team, the Tigers left eight runners on-base.
