[Softball] Falcons Pull Out Wild Sweep of Mount Marty

0 46

WICHITA, Kan. – The Friends University Falcons found two different ways to win in sweeping the Mount Marty Lancers today (Feb. 27) by scores of 8-7 and 17-7.

The opening game saw the Falcons fall into a 7-1 hole as the Lancers got a solo homer from Makenzi Rockwell in the first and then a grand slam by Emma Burns in the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, Kaylen Lassley (SR/Salina, Kan. ) provided a big answer and got the Falcons right back in the game with one swing of the bat by drilling a two-out grand slam of her own.

Then in the bottom of the seventh Jennifer Garcia (FR/Sylamar, Calif. ), who had homered earlier in the game, hit a bases-loaded, game-tying two-out single.

Lassley then reached on an error that allowed pinch runner Lacee Travens (SO/Reno, Nev. ) to come home with the game-winning walkoff run.

Hali Walters (SR/Longmont, Colo.) started game one for the Falcons and struck out seven in 5.2 innings of work, with seven runs allowed. Ashlyn Jacobs (SR/Valley Center, Kan. ) followed that with 1.1 scoreless innings of relief and one strikeout to pick up the victory.

The Falcons poured on the offense early and often in the second game, getting an RBI double from Garcia and a two-run single by Lassley to key a four-run first frame.

Mount Marty temporarily struck back by taking advantage of four Falcon errors that aided a six-run second inning.

But the Falcons bats weren't going anywhere as RBI singles from Kat Davis (JR/Keller, Texas), Garcia, Lassley and Makenna Mitchell (SO/Orange County, Calif. ) in the second put Friends right back in front, while two-run homers from Davis and Garcia, along with a solo blast by Lassley in the third broke the game wide open.

Davis then unloaded a three-run homer in the fourth before Garcia tripled and scored on a single by Lassley that allowed the Falcons to win on the run rule.

"I felt like our team grew each inning by finally making the adjustments at the plate, coming together and having confidence in everyone's ability, we needed everyone!" said Friends head coach Suzanne Unruh. "The energy and fight in game one from the whole team definitely carried into game two."

The Falcons will get right back at it with a home twinbill tomorrow (Feb 28) at 1 pm against Hastings College.
