Board that considered eminent domain wants to pay for land

MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) — A Georgia school board that considered using eminent domain to obtain nearby property for a softball field and tennis court has decided to pay $3 million for the land.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the Cobb County School Board has voted to buy the land in Marietta, settling a long negation over the price.

Walton High School’s 2015 rebuild swallowed the land it used for its softball and tennis teams. Both have since held practice and home games at a park that’s about five miles from campus. Having the girls’ team play off campus while the boy’s team played at the school put it at risk of violating Title IX law.

Cobb school district spokeswoman Nan Kiel said a timeline or cost estimate hasn’t been established yet.
