WBSC Softball World Championship in Prague showcases potential in Europe, youth appeal

Big, engaging crowds filled with youngsters at the first-ever WBSC Men’s Softball World Championship in Europe, being played in the Czech Republic, is demonstrating the promise of baseball and softball on the old continent, where baseball and softball have been steadily growing participation and viewership numbers.

Already widely popular across the Americas and East Asia, WBSC leaders, together with baseball-softball stakeholders and professional leagues, are aggressively targeting growth in Europe, considered a key zone to evolving baseball-softball into one of the elite global sports.

Only halfway through the WBSC Men’s Softball World Championship in central Europe, it has already generated the most online views and social media volume in the event’s history, with over 3 million views and over 4 million impressions on WBSC’s social media accounts.

“Showcasing the highest level of the sport is a great way to promote it,” said Tommy Velasquez, Chairman of the WBSC Softball Division. “This event, thanks to our great hosts Czech Softball Association, marks another step forward for the development of softball, together with baseball, across Europe.”

The WBSC event is setting the stage to boost participation numbers in Central Europe. The three European nations competing in the WBSC Men’s Softball World Championship — Czech Republic, Denmark and the Netherlands — are also showcasing Europe’s rise in competition, level, with victories over teams from the Africa, Americas and Asia.

Engaging the Youth at the Park

At the stadiums, over 8,000 children aged 12-16 have been introduced to softball during the WBSC Men’s Softball World Championship, through the efforts of the local organisers, the Czech Softball Association in collaboration with the local authorities of Prague and Havlíčkův Brod, where the event it being held.

Baseball and softball are set for an Olympic return at the Tokyo 2020 Games, and WBSC leaders are pushing global growth to keep the only bat-and-ball Olympic sport on the official programme of the world’s greatest sporting stage over the long-term.
