Rain dampens high school baseball, softball playoffs

0 30

There will be makeup playoff games in baseball and softball later this week as the rainstorm forecast to soak the Bay Area on Wednesday began to move in.

As of the early afternoon, the North Coast Section had postponed all of its baseball games Wednesday except three: Newark Memorial at Washington-Fremont, Alameda at Sir Francis Drake and Benicia at Northgate.

But it’s possible those games will be washed out, too.

The Central Coast Section still had a green light on most of its full schedule of baseball and softball games Wednesday as of 2:30 p.m. but has tentative plans to make up postponed games either Thursday or Friday.

CCS Division I softball games between North Salinas and San Mateo, as well as Alvarez and Aragon, have been moved to Friday at the College of San Mateo.

The NCS had not made any changes to its softball schedule Wednesday, but that could change, commissioner Gil Lemmon said.

The section’s baseball games postponed Wednesday will be made up Friday, according to assistant commissioner Pat Cruickshank.

For the NCS, the reshuffling is nothing new.

In the fall, the section office spent much of November postponing and rescheduling football games, water polo matches and cross-country championships because of poor air quality from wildfires.

“I hate to say it, but when it rains, it pours,” Lemmon said. “It’s just been one of those years.”

If a game starts but cannot be completed, it would be suspended until a later date unless the teams have played 4 1/2 innings and the home team is ahead or five innings and either team is ahead.

In that case, the team with the lead would advance, Lemmon said.

Check back later for updates.
