The Chronicle’s top-ranked softball team, Foothill-Pleasanton, improved to 23-0 with a 6-0 East Bay Athletic League first-round playoff win at home over Carondelet-Concord.

Coach Matt Sweeney was delighted by the news Tuesday that his junior catcher Courtney Beaudin had gotten a scholarship offer from UCLA.

It came shortly after top-ranked Foothill-Pleasanton improved to 23-0 with a 6-0 East Bay Athletic League first-round playoff win over visiting Carondelet-Concord.

Beaudin went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. The Falcons will host 10th-ranked Amador Valley-Pleasanton on Thursday for the EBAL playoff title.

Sweeney was in the coaches’ office after Tuesday’s game when Beaudin ran up and delivered the news. Sweeney said she has accepted the offer.

“I’m just so happy for her — this is totally awesome,” he said. “She completely deserves it. I’m really not sure what college coaches were waiting for. It (her first offer) definitely shouldn’t have taken this long.”

Her friend and batterymate, junior pitcher Nicole May, accepted an offer to Oklahoma before her freshman season at Foothill. She pitched a six-hitter Tuesday and struck out 12.

Oklahoma, a four-time national champion, is ranked No. 1. UCLA, a 12-time national champ, is ranked No. 3.

“If your battery is going to UCLA and Oklahoma, you should be pretty good,” Sweeney said. “You don’t have to do a bunch of coaching.”

The Falcons, ranked third nationally by MaxPreps, have outscored opponents 148-12. On Tuesday, Pittsburgh-bound shortstop Hope Alley had two hits, drove in three runs and blasted a home run. Caelin Cavanaugh went 3-for-3.

Senior first baseman Ellen Ebbers has signed with Morgan State and junior second baseman Hailey Hayes has committed to Boise State. Sweeney said with all the expectations, it has been challenging to stay motivated. Six...
