[Softball] Softball secures nail-biting game 2 from Lions after falling in game 1

DAYTON, TN - The St. Andrews University Softball team continued their conference play as they traveled to Bryan College for a Tuesday evening double header. The Lions edged past St. Andrews 5-4 in the first game with SAU taking game 2 with a score of 6-5.

The Knights were quick to light up the scoreboard, recording a run in the first inning off a Stevie Holland (FR/Oakridge, NC) sac fly to right field.

 

The game would remain quiet until the bottom of the 2nd inning when the Lions started putting the bat on the ball, collecting 2 hits and taking the lead, 2-1. St. Andrews answered back in the top of the 3rd with a tying run that was fueled by a lead-off double to center field by Mandy Shaffer (SR/Sandyston, NJ). Asucena Trujillo (JR/Nyssa/OR) scored Shaffer on a sacrifice fly to left field, making the score 2-2.

 

The bottom of the fourth inning would be the next time that any action would take place, when Bryan took advantage of a SAU error in the inning and scoring 2 runs.

 

The Knights scored one two additional runs in the top of the 5th, but that would be all they could manage to obtain, falling to the Lions 5-4 as Bryan pushed the go-ahead run across in the bottom of the 5th.

After a quiet first inning, the Knights had their best inning of the game in the top of the 2nd as they batted in 3 runs. Several errors from Bryan played to SAU's advantage, with the Knights scoring 2 runs that resulted from the errors.

 

Bryan followed with a run in the bottom of the 2nd before SAU tallied two more runs in the beginning of the third inning. The Lions began to create better contact with the ball as they recorded 2 hits in the 3rd inning and collected 2 runs, making the score 5-3.

 

The Knights would go on to score their final run of the game in the top of the fourth inning when senior Rachel Swartwood (SR/Wilmington, NC) hit a single to right field, scoring the runner on third base.

 

The game would remain with a score of 6-3 going into the bottom of the 7th inning when the Lions attempted a comeback, recording 2 runs. The Knights were able to put an end to Bryan's late-inning rally with a strike out from S.K. Brown (JR/Huntersville, NC) and a pop out with runners on third and second.

 

St. Andrews softball will next be in action on Saturday, March 23rd, as they travel to Columbia International University for another AAC match up.
