[Softball] SAU Softball Splits with Barton College in Walk-Off Fashion

LAURINBURG, N.C. - The St. Andrews University Softball team split their doubleheader against non-conference Barton College on Sunday afternoon. The Knights won the first game 10-9 and dropped the second game, 7-1.

Both teams were able to tally a run in the first inning, with the Bulldogs answering back with a huge top of the 2nd inning. The Bulldogs caused 5 errors for the Knights while collecting 2 hits and pushing 5 runs across the plate.

 

The Knights were scoreless in the 2nd and 3rd inning, but Barton was able to force a pair of SAU errors in the top of the 3rd to earn one additional run. In the bottom of the 4th inning, senior Amanda Shaffer (SR/Sandyston, NJ) doubled to left, scoring sophomore Cassie Fortner (SO/Lexington, NC) to make the score 7-2.  

 

Barton finished out their scoring in the top of the 5th, recording 2 more runs on two hits and one error. The Knights had themselves a strong inning in the 6th, scoring 6 runs on 7 hits to make the score 9-8, trailing by one run going into the final inning.

 

In the bottom of the 7th, an S.K. Brown (JR/Huntersville, NC) single scored senior Reina Mondragon (SR/Williamston, NC) to tie the game 9-9 before sophomore Lucy Trujillo (SO/Nyssa, OR) singled through the 5-6 hole, scoring the winning run in from third and collecting the walk-off win.

 

Cassie Fortner led the Knights on offense as she went 2 for 2 at the plate while S.K. Brown was 2 for 3. Brown and Lucy Trujillo each had a team-high of 2 RBI's in Game 1.

Barton College took the lead early in the game as they pushed a run across in the first inning off one hit. The Knights were unable to connect and score any runs until the 4th inning, when the Bulldogs had already tallied 3 runs in the 3rd and 1 in the top of the 4th.

 

The Knights scored their lone run in the bottom of the 4th after two back-to-back bunts for base hits by senior Rachel Swartwood (SR/Wilmington, NC) and Cassie Fortner, followed by a Destiny Locklear (SO/Pembroke, NC) RBI scoring Fortner.

 

The Bulldogs scored an additional run in the 6th, as well as the 7th to take the win, 7-1.

 

With the split, the Knights improve to 7-15 and 4-6 at home.

 

St. Andrews softball will next be in action on Wednesday, March 13, as they host conference foe Bluefield College beginning at 2 pm.
