[Softball] Softball sweeps doubleheader at Brevard

0 12

BREVARD, N.C. – Softball improved to 8-8, its best start under head coach Heather Maston, with a doubleheader sweep over Brevard College Sunday afternoon. The Cavs pounded 10 hits and forced six errors for an 11-3 win in game one before shutting out the Tornados 3-0 in game two.

"Finishing up our February games, we're clicking as a team on offense and defense and playing really well together," said Coach Maston. "I think we're in a great position to head into conference play strong on Mar. 7 with Columbia International."

Game 1: 11-3 Win
Four Cavs were responsible for the squad's 10 hits in game one as Destiny Munoz went 3-for-3 at the plate and Ashlyn Vickers went 3-for-4. Mikki Shelton and Liana Elliott each knocked a pair of hits as well.

Vickers had four RBIs, the first two coming in the top of the third when she pushed Bree Powell and Graclyn Green across the plate with a double down the left field line to give the Cavs a 4-1 lead. Her third and fourth would come by way of knocking Elliott in on a single in both the fourth and fifth innings.

Before getting knocked in by Vickers in the fifth, Elliott sent a pair of her own runs home with a two-RBI double.

Cailin Warner got the win on the mound throwing all five innings and only giving up one earned run. She also had six strikeouts in her day of work.

Game 2: 3-0 Win
Game two proved to be a pitcher's duel that ended in favor of the Cavs as Charlie Smith threw a complete-game shutout, giving up just one hit and fanning six batters in seven innings.

Green got things started in the top of the first by plating Mikki Shelton on a sac fly to left. Immediately after, Ronnie Ellis doubled down the left field line to send Aly Woody across and take a 2-0 lead for Montreat.

Woody would extend her team's lead to 3-0 with a leadoff in the park homerun in the top of the seventh.

Smith's no-hitter was spoiled in the bottom of the seventh when Brevard singled to center for its lone hit of the game.

Up Next: The Cavs have a slate of JV games this week before varsity returns to action in their home opener on Mar. 5. Montreat hosts Converse College in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
