February 15, 2018
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The St. Andrews University softball team traveled to Converse College on Friday afternoon for a non-conference double header. The Valkyries topped the Knights in game one, 6-2, and game two, 9-5.
GAME 1: CONVERSE 6, SAU 2
After a scoreless first inning, the Knights would be the first to push a run across in the second inning off a Lexi Dawson (SR/Garland, NC) double to left center. Dawson's double scored Asucena Trujillo (JR/Nyssa, OR) who reached base by a hit by pitch. The Valkyries answered back with two runs in the bottom of the second and one run in the bottom of the third. St. Andrews was unable to score until the 7th inning, when they scored one run, but this was not enough as the Valkyries had tallied two more runs in the 4th and a run in the 5th to win the game, 6-2.
Game one was led by Dawson's perfect offensive game, going 3 for 3 with an RBI. Junior S.K. Brown (JR/Huntersville, NC) also had a strong game, getting hits in both of her at bats. Also hitting well was junior Brennan Broadaway (JR/Oakboro, NC), going 2 for 4 for the Knights.
GAME 2: CONVERSE 9, SAU 5
The Knights got off to an early lead in the top of the 1st inning after a Broadaway RBI, scoring senior Rachel Swartwood (SR/Wilmington, NC). Converse answered back quickly with a run of their own in the bottom of the 1st as well as the 2nd inning. In the top of the third, Nikki Santiago (SR/Gainesville, FL) put the ball in play and reached first on a fielder's choice, which scored Swartwood, tying the game 2-2. The Valkyries had a strong 3rd inning, recording four runs against the Knights.
St. Andrews struggled to score any runs until the top of the 5th inning when Lexi Dawson hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Broadaway. Converse continued to push runs across the plate, collecting two more runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to make the score 9-4. The Knights came up short in the top of the 7th inning scoring only one run off a Dawson single to right field, scoring Santiago making the final score of the game 9-5.
Leading the Knights in Game 2 would be senior Britnei Murray (SR/Patterson, CA) as she went 2 for 2. Senior Nikki Santiago also had a strong game going 3 for 4 for the Knights while Lexi Dawson went 1 for 3 and collected 2 RBI's.
