[Softball] Mustangs Split Start of Season in Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Mustangs traveled south to open the 2019 season in central Florida competing in the RussMatt Softball Tournament. After dropping two games on day one, the Mustangs bounced back on the second day to collect two wins. The Mustangs are off and running to a 2-2 start on the season.

The Mustangs season opener consisted of a battle against the No. 22 Fire of Southeastern University (Fla.). Following the first pitch, the Mustangs were held scoreless in the top of the first. Madelyn Irwin (JR/Orange Park, Fla.) got the start on the mound holding the Fire scoreless in the latter half of the first inning. The Mustangs struck first in the top of the second with two crossing home plate. The Fire would follow up scoring a run of their own in the bottom of the second inning. In the third, the Mustangs tacked on a run followed by a pair in the fourth. With the score reading 5-1 in favor of the Mustangs, the Fire added three runs to the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. Failing to score any more runs the remainder of the game, the Mustangs gave up three more runs in the bottom of the sixth resulting in a 5-7 loss. Offensive leaders in the game were Jolona Shield (SR/Lawrence, Kan.) going 2-for-4 with one RBI, Emily Oler (SO/Cedar Rapids, Iowa) going 1-for-3 with two RBI, and Morgan Braughton (SO/Marion, Iowa) going 1-for-3 with one RBI. In the circle, Irwin pitched five innings allowing five runs on eight hits, walking two, and striking out one. Jayna Witzany (FR/Cottage Grove, Minn.) entered in relief to pitch just one inning and was handed the loss after allowing two runs on one hit, walking one, and striking out two. In the second game of the night, the Mustangs would fall 11-13 in extra innings to the Olivet Nazarene University Tigers.

After being handed two losses to start the season, the Mustangs came back to the diamond ready to collect two wins before heading home. In game one, the Mustangs defeated the Royals of Warner University (Fla.) 3-1. Both teams were held scoreless through two innings until the Mustangs threw two runs up on the board in the bottom of the third. No one would cross the plate again until the top of the sixth when the Royals put up one run. The Mustangs added one more run in the bottom of the sixth for security to then hold the Royals scoreless in the seventh and secure the win. Offensive leaders in the game were Jess Heick (SO/Solon, Iowa) going 3-for-3 with two RBI and Shield going 1-for-3 with one RBI. Witzany went the duration of the game on the mound allowing just one run on seven hits, walking one, and sitting down six. In the second game of the night and final game of the tournament, the Mustangs outlasted the Redhawks of Martin Methodist College (Tenn.) in eight innings coming out on top 6-5.
 
Up next, the Mustangs will return to Iowa to compete in four games on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 23-24 at the Saint Ambrose Dome in Davenport, Iowa.
