[Softball] Softball completes midweek sweep over Fort Valley

0 5

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – Softball pounded 19 hits while allowing only one run in a doubleheader sweep of Fort Valley State on Thursday afternoon. Montreat's pitchers were fantastic on the mound, allowing just eight hits between the two games to help the Cavs to improve to 5-5 this season.

"I was extremely proud of my team's continued effort to get better with every game," said head Coach Heather Maston. "These ladies worked hard all day and made adjustments with each at bat, and we're going to carry that into our games the rest of the weekend."

Game 1
Montreat busted out 10 hits and no errors to take a 5-1 win over the Wildcats in game one, and four of those five runs came in the opening inning. Starting pitcher Cailin Warner retired six batters and only allowed three hits in her five-inning performance before Josie Harris came in to shut it down in the final two innings.

Ashlyn Vickers had a hit and an RBI, pushing Warner across the plate to open the game's scoring. Kesley Nolasco then built Montreat's lead to 3-0 with a two-RBI double to left, scoring Vickers and Graclyn Green.

Green had her own RBI in the sixth when she singled up the middle to score Liana Elliot, making the score 5-1.

Montreat forced four errors on the Wildcats and held them to three hits in game one.

Game 2
Charlie Smith pitched six shutout innings with four strikeouts before Ronnie Smith came in to seal a 7-0 victory for the Cavs in game two.

Elliot went 1-for-2 with two RBIs, a sac fly in the third and an RBI-double to right in the fifth. Three other Cavs had sac flies as Mikki Shelton's scored Marissa Romeo in the first, Nolasco's sent Shelton across in the fifth, and Ellis plated Vickers on one in the seventh.

Vanessa Bartkewicz knocked in the other run for Montreat, going 2-for-4 in the game with an RBI single up the middle in the seventh.

Up Next: Montreat is right back at it with a doubleheader in the Middle Georgia Round Robin on Friday. First pitch is at 10am, and game two will begin at approximately 4pm.
