LAURINBURG, N.C. – The St. Andrews Softball team split their double header against Division II, University of Mount Olive, taking the first game 8-7 and dropping the second game 7-3.

GAME 1: SAU 8 UMO 7

After a straight three outs for the visiting Trojans, the Knights would record two runs built off Rachel Swartwood (SR/Wilmington, NC)'s single to center field. Swartwood stole second, putting her in perfect position to score. Junior Brennan Broadaway (JR/Oakboro, NC) reached base off a Trojan error, putting her on base joining Swartwood. A grounder by Asucena Trujillo (JR/Nyssa, OR) scored Swartwood, and Broadaway would later score on a passed ball by the catcher.

Mount Olive would come in and score two runs, tying the score with the Knights. Senior Lexi Dawson (SR/Garland, NC) was due to the plate for the Knights in the bottom of the 2nd inning and singled to left field. The Trojans walked junior S.K. Brown (JR/Huntersville, NC) which was followed by a perfect bunt by Amanda Shaffer (SR/Sandyston, NJ). The Knights would go to score 6 runs in the bottom of the second resulting from singles from Cassie Fortner (SO/Lexington, NC), Brennan Broadaway, and Asucena Trujillo.

The third inning was filled with SAU errors, allowing Mount Olive to score three runs. The Trojans built momentum off their three scored runs, coming on defense and securing outs with the first three batters for St. Andrews. Freshman Mollie Phillips (FR/Lexington, NC) relieved pitcher, S.K. Brown, coming in to throw in the top of the fourth. The Trojans once again pushed another run across each in the fourth and fifth inning. St. Andrews held onto the 8-7 win after two scoreless innings on each side.

Game 1 was led by seniors Rachel Swartwood and Lexi Dawson, each recording 2 hits out of 3 at bats. Asucena Trujillo led the Knights in RBI's, collecting two against the Trojans.

GAME 2: UMO 7 SAU 3

The Trojans got off to a good start with several singles and scoring two runs in the first inning. Unfortunately, the Knights could not find any luck offensively in the first three innings.

The fourth inning would have Mount Olive tallying another two runs against the Knights, but St. Andrews answered back with two runs of their own. The Knights were able to start a two-out rally off a walk by Nikki Santiago (SR/Gainesville, FL). Dawson then came up to bat and hit a double to left field, scoring Santiago. S.K. Brown would then tally a single to center, advancing Dawson who would later reach home after a passed ball by the catcher making the score 4-2.

Mount Olive answered back with a scored run in the top of the 5th and 2 runs in the 6th inning. St. Andrews reached home one last time in the bottom of the 6th inning after a Broadaway double, but this would not be enough, dropping the second game of the double header with a score of 7-3.

Brennan Broadaway led the Knights going 2 for 3 with a double while Lexi Dawson went 2 for 2 and collected an RBI.

The Knights will next be in action as they travel to Converse College on Friday, February 15th, for a double header starting at 1 pm.
