[Softball] Softball drops season opener at Belmont Abbey

BELMONT, N.C. – The St. Andrews University softball team dropped their first games of the season at Belmont Abbey this Friday afternoon with scores of 6-4 and 17-0.

BAC 6 SAU 4

The Knights gained a quick lead over the Crusaders with a first-inning run with Cassie Fortner (SO/Lexington, NC) scoring from a Brennan Broadaway (JR/Oakboro, NC) single to right field.  The score would remain 1-0 until the third inning when Broadaway ripped the ball down the right field line, collecting a double and scoring senior Nikki Santiago.

Belmont Abbey collected a run in the fourth inning off a single to left, but the Knights were not done scoring yet. Junior Taylor Seirsma (JR/Zeeland, MI) singled down the right field line to tally two RBI's, scoring Rachel Swartwood (SR/Wilmington, NC) and S.K. Brown (JR/Huntersville, NC).

The bottom of the 6th inning was dominated by the Crusaders, with a homerun and 4 additional runs. The Knights unfortunately could not connect in the 7th to obtain the lead, giving Belmont Abbey to win, 6-4.

S.K. Brown pitched a strong game allowing only 8 hits and collecting 4 strike outs for the Knights. Brennan Broadaway led the Knights offensively going 2 for 4 with 2 RBI's.

BAC 17 SAU 0

The momentum of the first game carried over to the second game for the Crusaders as they recorded 6 runs in the first two innings off freshman pitcher, Mollie Phillips (FR/Lexington, NC) SAU then replaced Phillips with Broadaway in the late 2nd inning. Belmont Abbey tallied 3 runs off Broadaway before SAU made another pitching change to Alyssa Farrar (FR/Charlotte, NC). The final pitching change was made late in the 4th inning when S.K. Brown replaced Farrar and closed out the inning.

The Knights fell to Belmont Abbey in five innings, 17-0, and will next be in action on Saturday, February 2nd, at Limestone College.
