[Softball] SDC Loses Lead, Rally Falls Short in DH against William Jessup

SANTEE, Calif. — After being shutout in Game 1, the SDC softball team exploded for 10 runs in Game 2 and held a late lead.

But unfortunately for the Hawks, the Warriors came back and defeated SDC 16-10 in the second game.

SDC lost 9-0 in Game 1 to fall to 10-26 on the season and 0-14 in conference play. The Warriors improved to 24-12 overall and 7-4 in the GSAC.

The Hawks were held to just three hits in the first game and no runner reached third base.

In Game 2, Jessup started off with a bang with three runs in the top of the first inning. In the bottom half of the inning, Jordan Neal launched a 2-run homer to left field that just stayed fair to cut the deficit to one. Nicole Whitney then doubled to tie the game at 3-3 before Kaylyn Rubalcava doubled home Whitney to take their first lead of the day at 4-3.

Whitney tallied another RBI double, this time scoring Kayla Mack. Maritza Martinez hit a ground-rule double to score Whitney as the Hawks led 6-3.

After four innings, the Hawks held an 8-4 lead.

But in the top of the fifth, the Warriors slammed back with eight runs in the fifth and took a 12-8 lead. WJU added four in the top of the seventh and the Hawks trailed 16-8 heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Rubalcava tallied a 2 RBI single through the right side for the ninth and tenth runs, but it wasn't enough.

SDC tallied 14 hits for their 10 runs. Neal and Mack led with three hits and three runs apiece. Rubalcava led with 3 RBI.

The Hawks will turn around on Saturday and take on Menlo College at San Pasqual High School. The double-header is slated for a 2 p.m. start.
