[Softball] Softball Struggles at Truett-McConnell
CLEVELAND, Ga. - The St. Andrews University Softball team could not get their offense on track in dropping all 4 games of their Georgia conference doubleheader to conference foes, Truett-McConnell University (Ga.) and Reinhardt University (Ga.) over the weekend. SAU fell to Truett on Friday 6-2 in game one and 8-0 in game two and fell 14-0 and 8-0 to Reinhardt on Saturday.
GAME 1: TRUETT 6, SAU 2
SAU got on the board first in game one leading 1-0, but Truett would come back against Knights' starter, S.K. Brown (SO/Huntersville, NC) scoring five runs over the first two innings to lead 5-1 after two. The Knights would get one back in the third but Truett added a final run in the 4th off SAU sophomore reliever/3B Brennan Broadaway (SO/Oakboro, NC). SAU could not get any more rallies the rest of the game off Truett starter Bethany Hyde totaling just four hits and two runs even as they drew 7 walks off Hyde as well.
Brown (3-9) allowed five runs on six hits with two walks while Broadaway allowed one run on 3 hits with 3 walks and a strikeout.
Leading the offense in game one with hits were Broadaway, junior infielder Nikki Santiago (JR/Gainesville, FL), freshman CF Cassie Fortner (FR/Lexington, NC), and junior 1B Lexi Dawson (JR/Garland, NC), while freshman catcher Lucy Trujillo (FR/Nyssa, OR) drove in a run with her walk. Broadaway also stole two bases.
GAME 2: TRUETT 8, SAU 0
Truett also got off to a slow start in game two scoring one run over the first 3 innings off Brown, SAU's game two starter. Brown, though, would get into some trouble in the 5th allowing two more runs after Truett had scored two the previous inning to knock her out of the game. She ended up giving up five runs on five hits on a walk and a strikeout. Freshman reliever Samantha Olsen (FR/Palm Coast, FL) then came in to relieve her and allowed a hit, two walks and two runs. Broadaway then fished off the game allowing a hit and a run but Truett ended it when they scored 8 runs.
The SAU offense, on the other hand, could not find any traction off the Truett starter who threw all 6 innings allowing just 2 hits with 5 Ks while Truett's Brie Levy went 3 for 3 with three home runs and 6 RBIs.
Leading the Knights with hits in game two were 3B Broadaway and sophomore RF Asucena Trujillo (SO/Nyssa, OR).
SAU falls to 14-24 on the season and 2-14 in the AAC while Truett goes to 11-5 in conference and 26-12 overall.
SAU will finally return home to host Union College (Ky.) on Tuesday at 1:00 PM in a DH.
