[Softball] Vikings Sweep Mount Mercy in Home Opener 2-0

Des Moines, Iowa - Grand View went 2-0 in their home opener against Mount Mercy Wednesday afternoon. Winning game one 8-0 and ending game two in five innings with a score of 13-4.

Game One | Grand View – 8, Mount Mercy – 3 |

The Vikings defeated the Mustangs 8-3, highlighted by three Viking home runs late in the game.  Miranda Nash (SR/Urbandale, IA) hit the first home run of her career along with Lexie Biehl (SR/Maquoketa, IA) hitting her second and third home run of the season.

It was not until the second inning the Vikings were able to put themselves on the board after Maddie Thilges (SO/Johnston, IA) reached home from the initial walk.

Mount Mercy put two runs up in the top of the second but Jillian Belieu (JR/West Des Moines, IA) laid down a sacrifice bunt, bringing in three runs after a Mustang error allowing the Vikings to take a 5-2 lead. Grand View put one more on the board in the fourth taking a 6-2 lead before Biehl and Nash sealed the deal with three home runs collectively.

Claudia Farrell (SR/Des Moines, IA) earned the win for the Vikings at the mound, striking out nine batters and allowing only one earned run.

Grand View tallied seven hits on the day lead by Biehl and Kate Crow (SR/Ames, Iowa) who collected two hits each. Jillian Belieu and Biehl each had two RBI for the Vikings.

Game Two | Grand View – 13, Mount Mercy – 4 |

The Vikings won game two, 13-4 over the Mustangs in five innings during their home opener Wednesday afternoon.

The Vikings took the lead in the third. Helping to secure the win was Lauren Poortinga (JR/Des Moines, IA) and Kelsey Winnett (JR/Coon Rapids, IA) who both hit a standup double in the bottom of the third, bringing in five runs collectively allowing Grand View to take a 7-0 lead.

Grand View mustered up 12 hits in game two. Kari Adams (SO/Newton, IA) and Crow each lead the Vikings with two leads a piece.

Libby Yenger (JR/Indianola, IA) pitched for Grand View. Yenger allowed six hits and four runs over the five innings. She was able to strike out three and only walked one.

The Vikings will play again Friday at home against Central Methodist at 2 and 4 PM.
