[Softball] Softball Splits With STLCOP

FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, IL- The Hornet Softball team came ready to fight in their home opener against Saint Louis College of Pharmacy. They tallied 26 hits between the two games and split the series with a 6-5 loss and a 14-5 win.

GAME ONE: HARRIS-STOWE (5) ST. LOUIS COLLEGE OF PHARMACY (6)-9 INNINGS

The Eutectics struck first in the top of the 3rd when Allison Dewald singled up the middle and brought Lauren Wright home.

HSSU answered in the bottom half of the inning when Mallory Pappert (SR/Affton, MO) hit a rocket to center field and sent Emily Lavine (SR/St. Louis, Missouri) around the bases.

Both teams scored again in the 5th inning, starting with STLCOP in the top of the inning; Lauren Wright scored on a batted ball by Keelyn Stein while Amber Walsh was able to score from second base on a Harris-Stowe error.

Harris-Stowe got their runs back in the bottom of the 5th.  Ariel Lipe (SR/Ellington, Missouri) scored first on a Eutectic error. Cassidy Williams (JR/Olive Branch, MS) then doubled to the wall in left-center field to bring Pappert across home plate. Keshundrea Bradley (SO/Memphis, TN) scored the final run of the inning when Sophia Chamberlain (JR/Bakersfield, CA) singled to second base to take a 4-3 lead.

By the end of the 7th inning, the Hornets and Eutectics found themselves tied at 5-5 to send the game to extra innings.

STLCOP would be the first and only team to score in extra innings when Jessica Kirk grounded out to second base and sent Lauren Wright home from third base to take the game 6-5.

Sophia Chamberlain got the start today going 9.0 innings with 5 strikeouts and allowing 5 hits.

GAME TWO: HARRIS-STOWE (14) ST. LOUIS COLLEGE OF PHARMACY (5)-6 INNINGS

The Hornets didn't waste time messing around in the second game, picking up 12 runs in three innings to end the game in the 6th inning.

After scoring one run in the bottom of the 2nd, HSSU scored 5 runs on 6 hits in the 4th inning. Britany Wildermuth (FR/Belleville, IL), Jacquline Ems (JR/House Spring, Missouri), Emily Lavine, Ariel Lipe, and Mallory Pappert all scored touched home plate to take a 7-5 lead.

Harris-Stowe would add to that lead in the 5th inning when Ariel Lipe and Mallory Pappert both drove in runs.

The final inning saw HSSU flexing their bats and ending the game with a double to left field from Mallory Pappert that scored Emily Lavine and Ariel Lipe to take a 14-6 win.

Courtney Norris (SR/St. Louis, Missouri) got the start for game two going 4.0 innings with two strikeouts while Sophia Chamberlain came in for the final 2.0 innings to record her first save of the season.

After today's games, Harris-Stowe moves to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in AMC play. They will be back in action this Saturday when they host the Trojans of Hannibal-LaGrange University. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Moody Park.
