[Softball] Softball Sweeps Shaw

LAURINBURG, N.C. - The St. Andrews University Softball team kept up their hot play of late by sweeping their non-conference DH at home Tuesday vs. Div. II Shaw University (N.C). SAU rallied to win game one 5-4 before pummeling the Bears 11-3 in game two. SAU has now won 12 of their last 14 games.

GAME 1: SAU 5, Shaw 4

Junior pitcher Nancy Amos (JR/Huntersville, NC) (7-1, 1.43 ERA) came on in relief of sophomore starter S.K. Brown (SO/Huntersville, NC) in the first inning after Brown had walked the first two batters to throw a complete game. Amos allowed 8 hits and 2 runs (1 earned) with no walks and two strikeouts over 7 innings to get the win improving to 7-1.

Shaw got two runs in the first before the Lady Knights came back for two of their own in the bottom of the first scoring on a Shaw error and a Cassie Fortner (FR/Lexington, NC) RBI sac bunt. Shaw would add one more on the second before the Knights again tied it in the 4th as sophomore SS Ashlyn Dial (SO/Laurinburg, NC) came around to score on another Shaw error after she had singled to reach base.

Then, after Shaw added one more run in the 5th, SAU had to rally in the bottom of the 7th to walk off with the victory. The inning began with a Fortner single before she stole second and came around to score on Brennan Broadaway (SO/Oakboro, NC)'s double. Broadaway then stole third and eventually scored on a Shaw wild pitch for the game winner.

SAU also stole six bases in the win by five different players. Leading the Knights offensively was Broadaway with 3 hits including two doubles and an RBI while outfielder Rachel Swartwood (JR/Wilmington, NC) also recorded a multi-hit game and stole two bases.

GAME 2: SAU 11, Shaw 3

SAU the dominated game two in routing Shaw 11-3 and outhitting the bears 13-2. Out of SAU's 13 hits, 8 different Lady Knights were a part of them including four players with multi-hit games.

Leading the way was a 3 for 3 game and two doubles from Dial as she also scored 4 runs and drove in two runs. Fortner was then 2 for 3 with 4 RBIs while Junior DH Amanda Shaffer (JR/Sandyston, NJ) and Junior 2B Nikki Santiago (JR/Gainesville, FL) also recorded two hits each with an RBI apiece.

Broadaway (2-1), the Lady Knights starting pitcher in game two, allowed three first inning runs but then settled down to throw three more scoreless innings to pick up the win. She threw 4 total innings allowing only two hits and 3 runs with 3 walks and 3 strikeouts. Brown then came on in the 5th to throw a perfect inning as well.

Broadaway is also hitting .377 on the year as she along with junior 1B Lexi Dawson (JR/Garland, NC), senior catcher Katie Lougee (SR/Southport, NC), and sophomore 3B/DH Lily Pinto (SO/Boca Raton, FL) also recorded hits in game two while the Knights stole 3 bases. Shaffer and Swartwood are also leading the Knights with averages over .400 while Fortner leads in RBIs with 14.

SAU improves to 12-6 on the season while Shaw falls to 0-6.

SAU will now remain home as they begin conference play when they host Point University (Ga.) on Saturday at 12 noon.
