[Softball] SAU Softball Sweeps EWC

LAURINBURG, N.C. - The St. Andrews University Softball team swept their non-conference DH at home on Saturday vs. NAIA foe Edward Waters College (FL). SAU took game one with a score of 6-2 and edged the Tigers in game two with a score of 6-5.

GAME 1: SAU 6, Edward Waters 2

While the first inning was scoreless, Edward Waters earned a run in each the second and third inning as they took the first lead of the game. SAU then answered back by scoring 3 runs in the bottom half of the third and three more throughout the remaining innings, while holding Edward Waters scoreless the rest of the game.

Sophomore pitcher S.K. Brown (SO/Huntersville, NC) started for the Lady Knights, but was replaced in the third inning by Junior Nancy Amos (JR/Huntersville, NC) (5-1). Amos held the Tigers of Edward Waters to a low scoring game, only allowing one run in the 3rd inning along with two hits, 2 walks and 2 Ks while Brown allowed 2 hits and one run on 3 walks and 2 strikeouts.

SAU also had 11 stolen bases throughout the game while taking advantage of six EWC errors. Leading the Knights offensively was sophomore Lily Pinto (SO/Boca Raton, FL) as she went 2 for 3, while sophomore 3B Brennan Broadaway (SO/Oakboro, NC) also recorded two hits.

Also recording hits for the Knights were Junior RF/DH Amanda Shaffer (JR/Sandyston, NJ), Junior OF Rachel Swartwood (JR/Wilmington, NC), and Junior 1B Lexi Dawson (JR/Garland, NC) as the ladies outhit the Tigers 7-4.

GAME 2: SAU 6, Edward Waters 5

Edward Waters started off with a lead in the first inning, scoring 4 runs off Brown, the game two starter.

The score remained 4-0 until the bottom of the 3rd inning when SAU then tied the game at 4. Each team would then add a run in the 4th inning. The Lady Knights then took the lead to 6-5 in the bottom of the 6th to clinch the game.

Amos again came on in relief for the Knights to relieve Brown in the middle of the 1st inning. Amos would go on to throw 6 and 1/3 innings allowing 5 hits and one run with no walks and 3 Ks. This improves Amos to 6-1 for the season with a 1.49 ERA.

The Knights offense was led by Swartwood and Broadaway as they each tallied two hits apiece while Shaffer also earned a hit with two RBIs. Dawson led the way with a double and RBI while Broadaway and junior infielder Nikki Santiago (JR/Gainesville, FL) also drove in runs.

SAU now improves to 10-6 on the season with their 10th win in their last 12 games. EWC falls to 3-13 on the year.

St. Andrews will next be in action on Tuesday at home when they host Div. II Shaw University at 2:00 PM.
