[Softball] Hot Bats Propel Hawks in DH Sweep of Saint Katherine

ENCINIATS, Calif. — The SDC softball team hit four homers and scored 22 runs in the DH sweep against Saint Katherine on Thursday.

 

The wins gets the Hawks above .500 with a 7-5 record. Kayla Mack hit two of the four homers and collected six RBI. Emily McMath picked up wins in both games for her seventh win of the year.

 

In Game 1, the Hawks were actually trailing going into the fourth inning. Six hits and eight runs later, SDC then led 8-4. Jordan Neal started off the inning with a ground-rule double. Bailey Romano followed with a single and Nicole Whitney reached on a walk. SDC got their first run as Emily Espino was hit by a pitch. Angelina Savoldi reached on a bases-loaded walk and Joselle Nicolas singled to shallow right to give the Hawks three of their eight runs. Victoria Harris gave the Hawks the lead with a 2 RBI single and Kayla Mack hit her first homer of the day, a 3-run shot to right field for the eighth run of the inning.

 

SDC added a run in the top of the seventh, a solo homer from Espino, but had to hold a late rally by the Firebirds. They scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Kaylyn Rubalcava came in with two outs and the bases loaded. She allowed a walk to bring home a run but was able to close the door with the save, her first of her career.

 

The Hawks scored their nine runs on 12 hits. Four players had two hits apiece.

 

SDC kept their offensive prowess going in the second game, this time starting off better than the first game. SDC scored three runs in the first and five in the second for a quick 8-0 lead. Neal highlighted the inning with a 2-run homer to left-center to give the Hawks the 3-0 lead.

 

Later in the second inning, Mack hit her second bomb off the day, giving the Hawks an 8-0 lead. SDC added a run in the third and four in the fifth for the 13 runs. They racked up 15 hits in Game 2. Harris led with three hits. The 1-5 batters for the Hawks combined for nine hits, 12 RBI, and the two homers.

 

The Hawks are back on the diamond on March 2 against La Sierra at the Santee Sportsplex.
