[Softball] Softball Sweeps Converse for 4th straight win
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The St. Andrews University Softball team swept their non-conference DH on the road on Saturday vs. Div. II foe Converse College (S.C). SAU won game one 2-1, and game two 12-6.
GAME 1: SAU 2, CONVERSE 1
SAU got off to a 1-0 start in game one on junior 1B Lexi Dawson (JR/Garland, NC)'s RBI single scoring junior infielder Nikki Santiago (JR/Gainesville, FL). Converse then tied it with an RBI single in the first as well. It would remained tied until the 6th inning when SAU's Santiago scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.
Offensively, SAU was led by multi-hit games from Dawson and junior DH Amanda Shaffer (JR/Sandyston, NJ) while Santiago and sophomore 3B Brennan Broadaway (SO/Oakboro, NC) also recorded hits. Santiago and sophomore shortstop Ashlyn Dial (SO/Laurinburg, NC) also recorded hits.
Sophomore starting pitcher, S.K. Brown (SO/Huntersville, NC), threw 5 innings allowing 6 hits and one run with 3 walks and six strikeouts to get the win improving to 3-3. Broadaway, pictured, then threw the final two innings allowing just one hit and no runs to pick up her first save of the season.
GAME 2: SAU 12, CONVERSE 6
SAU got out to a quick 5-0 after two innings on freshman CF Cassie Fortner (FR/Lexington, NC)'s RBI double and Dial's RBI single, before adding four additional runs over the next two frames to lead 9-0 heading into the fifth. Shaffer's two-RBI single, Dawson's RBI single and a Converse error helped SAU to the lead. Converse then added two more in the 5th to extend the game where as the Knights would add three more runs in the 7th to go up 12-2 on a Dawson 2 RBI single and a Dial RBI double.
Dial ended up leading the offense with a 4 for 5 game and 2 RBIS while Dawson had two hits and 3 RBIs and Broadaway had a multi-hit game as well with 3 runs scored. SAU outhit Converse 15-7 overall led by 10 different players recording hits. Others recording hits were Santiago, freshman Lucy Trujillo (FR/Nyssa, OR), senior catcher Katie Lougee (SR/Southport, NC), freshman 3B Lily Pinto (SO/Boca Raton, FL), and junior RF Rachel Swartwood (JR/Wilmington, NC).
Junior P Nancy Amos (JR/Huntersville, NC) threw 4 shutout innings to pick up the win improving to 3-1 as she allowed just two hits and no walks with 2 Ks while reliever Broadaway gave up five hits and 6 runs (4 earned) on 3 walks and 3 Ks in relief over 3 innings.
SAU improves to 7-5 on the season with their 4th straight win while Converse falls to 0-10.
St. Andrews is back in action on Wednesday when they go to another Div. II foe, Mount Olive College (NC) for a 2 PM DH.
