[Softball] Softball Splits with the Mariners

SANTEE, Calif. — In a tale of two games, the SDC softball team split with Marymount California on Thursday.

The Hawks fell 13-2 in Game 1 but were triumphant in Game 2, winning 10-3.

SDC stays even on the season at 5-5. The Mariners are now 3-9 on the season.

The Hawks' bats were silent in Game 1, not scoring their runs until the fifth inning. The Mariners were able to get three in the second off a 3-run homer. The inning should've ended two batters before but an error kept the inning going for MCU and later the three runs occurred. Same story in the third inning as the third out would've let the Hawks go unscathed but a fielding error gave them more life and erupted for five in the third.

The Mariners added another five in the fourth to lead 13-0 after four innings.

Maritza Martinez singled home Angelina Savoldi for the first run in the fifth. Kayla Mack added another RBI single and scored Joselle Nicolas for the second run but the rally fell short there.

Emily McMath pitched the five innings for the Hawks and was only charged with five of the 13 runs as earned runs. SDC added six hits with no one having more than one.

In Game 2, the Hawks were the complete opposite than in Game 1 offensively. SDC scored in every inning for the win.

Martinez singled home Joselle Nicolas in the bottom of the first. The Mariners added a run in the top of the second before the Hawks added three in the second. Kaylyn Rubalcava singled to center and scored Bailey Romano and Jordan Neal. Victoria Harris added another RBI single, scoring Rubalcava for the 4-1 lead. SDC added two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth to complete the scoring.

The Hawks tallied 13 hits for their 10 runs. Five Hawks had two hits. Kayla Mack led with a team-high 3 RBI.

McMath avenged her first game loss with a win in Game 2. She allowed three runs on seven hits.

SDC will travel next week for the next set of games against Saint Katherine on Feb. 22 in Poway.
