[Softball] Softball Shuts Out Methodist for first win

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The St. Andrews University Softball team swept their non-conference DH on the road Tuesday at Div. III foe Methodist University (N.C) for their first two wins of the season.

SAU dominated to win game one 5-0 before winning 3-2 in game two with a two-run rally in the 7th.

GAME 1: SAU 5, METHODIST 0

SAU put up a three-run first inning on a sacrifice fly from sophomore shortstop Ashlyn Dial (SO/Laurinburg, NC) before sophomore DH Asucena Trujillo (SO/Nyssa, OR) knocked a two-run single driving in junior 1B Lexi Dawson (JR/Garland, NC) and sophomore 3B Brennan Broadaway (SO/Oakboro, NC). The Lady Knights then added an insurance run in the 2nd on a Nikki Santiago (JR/Gainesville, FL) RBI single scoring freshman CF Cassie Fortner (FR/Lexington, NC) while adding yet another run in the 7th as Fortner came around to score on Santiago's sac bunt.

Lady Knights' sophomore starting pitcher, S.K. Brown (SO/Huntersville, NC) (1-3), then dominated the Monarchs by throwing all 7 innings allowing just 3 hits and 0 runs with 5 walks and 5 strikeouts.

Dawson led the way with two hits including a double as SAU outhit MU 6-3. SAU also received hits from Fortner, Santiago, Broadaway, and Trujillo. Fortner also stole three bases while Santiago stole one and junior outfielder Rachel Swartwood (JR/Wilmington, NC) stole two.

GAME 2: SAU 3, METHODIST 2

Methodist scored their first run in the second inning before SAU came back to tie the game in the third on an error from Methodist while Fortner came around to score as she singled previously. The Knights then tied the game in the 7th as Fortner drove in junior pinch hitter Amanda Shaffer (JR/Sandyston, NJ), who had walked.

The Knights then took the lead on a Dawson sac fly scoring Fortner later in the 7th. SAU then advanced runners to 2nd and 4rd in the inning as they looked to add on but Dial flew out to end the top half.

Junior starting pitcher Nancy Amos (JR/Huntersville, NC) then finished out her complete game with little drama in the 7th as she struck out two batters. Amos ended up tossing 7 innings allowing 5 hits and two unearned runs with 2 walks and a season-high 8 strikeouts.

SAU outhit the Monarchs 8-5 led by multi-hit games from Fortner, Santiago, and Swartwood, who also reached base via hit by pitch. Fortner scored two runs with an RBI while Dial and junior DH Symphony Arguedas (JR/Riverside, CA) also recorded hits as well. Arguedas led the way with the lone extra-base hit as she hit a double while Santiago and freshman pinch-runner Destiny Locklear (FR/Pembroke, NC) stole bases.
