[Softball] Lady Evangels Fall to No. 18 SGU

4.28.10 - Oklahoma City, Okla.- The Mid-America Christian University softball team fell in a doubleheader to Sooner Athletic Conference opponent Saint Gregory's University who is currently ranked 18th nationally. MACU fell 6-1 in the opener and 16-6 in the night cap at Jack Allen Field on Wednesday.

SGU scored early in the opener with a double by Wendy Acosta, plating lead-off hitter Tara Nall who started the game with a single.

The Lady Evangels knotted up the score in the bottom of the second with a solo shot by freshman third baseman Autumn Lawrence.

The Lady Cavs broke the tie in the top of the third, scoring two runs. Autumn Brown and Cortney Reynaga led off the inning with hits to put runners on second and third. A sacrifice fly and a sacrifice bunt brought the home. SGU took a 3-1 lead.

SGU posted two insurance runs on three hits in the fifth. MACU had bases loaded in the bottom of the frame with no outs but were unable to produce a run.

Two hits and a MACU error led to the Lady Cavs final run in the seventh.

Caitlyn Ulmer took the loss in the circle for the Lady Evangels. The senior right-handed pitcher allowed six runs, five earned on 14 hits with three strikeouts.

MACU took an early 3-0 lead in the night cap. Kelcey Gabriel led off the inning with a single and moved into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt by Tiffanie Sanchez. Ulmer hit an RBI single to plate Gabriel. Ulmer then scored after Nall dropped a fly ball putting Candice Meza on first. With two outs, Lawerence came through with an RBI single through the gap at shortstop.

The Lady Evangels lead was short lived with SGU pouring on seven runs in the second inning. From there the Lady Cavs ran away with the game adding three runs in the fourth, two runs in the fifth and four in the seventh.

With two outs, Newman and Ulmer hit back-to-back singles followed by a double by Chelsea Downs, scoring two runs in the fifth.

The Lady Evangels final run came in the seventh with a sacrifice fly by Ulmer, plating Gabriel who led off the inning with a single.

Jill Wilbanks suffered the loss in the night cap, lasting 1.2 innings giving up seven runs on five hits with one strikeout. Ulmer returned to finish the game allowing 15 hits and nine runs, six earned with two strikeouts.

In their final game at Jack Allen Field the seniors faired well. Senior left fielder Kelcey Gabriel went 2-4 at the plate scoring two runs. Ulmer was 2-3 with two RBI's and right fielder Candice Meza posted an RBI.

The Lady Evangels will travel to Central Baptist College in Conway, Ark. to play in the NCCAA Central Region Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
