Women's College World Series 2017 scores: Oklahoma wins National Championship, beating Florida, 5-4 in Game 2
The Sooners have won back-to-back national championships.
For the second year in a row, the Oklahoma Sooners women’s softball team has won the Women’s College World Series. They entered the finals as the 10th seed up against the top-seeded Florida Gators, and won the best-of-three series in two games, the latest being a 5-4 game on Tuesday evening.
Oklahoma took the first game of the series on Monday, beating Florida, 7-5, over a wild 17-inning game.
In Tuesday’s game, the Sooners had their No. 4 pitcher on the mound but took an early lead. The Gators had some close calls in making a comeback, and in their final inning had their 2-3-4 batters going to the plate. But they couldn’t get it done and Oklahoma took the game and the title.
The first game ended when Shay Knighten hit a three-run home run with two outs in the top of the 17th inning. Kelly Barnhill was the pitcher who gave up the hit, leaving it right over the middle of the plate. That gave the Sooners the lead for good.
Florida loaded the bases in the bottom of the 17th, and the winning run was at the plate. But they only picked up one run in the situation, and the game came to an end in favor of Oklahoma.
The title games took place in Oklahoma City. The Gators won the previous two titles prior to the Sooners taking it last year, so it’s been back-to-back winners in each of the past two seasons. It was a competitive two games, but Oklahoma made it through without a third game being forced.
