Snowbird Finally Sets Closing Date for the 2026 Season as Utah Skiing Winds Down

And just like that, the curtains are about to drop on another Utah winter.

Snowbird, the final resort holdout that hadn’t confirmed its closing date yet, recently announced that its season will last until May 10, 2026.

Before then, the resort transitioned to a weekends-only operating schedule, Friday through Sunday. That applies to this weekend. Then, for the final days of the season, it’ll just be Saturday, May 9, and Sunday, May 10.

This upcoming weekend, Snowbird expects to run the Aerial Tram, Peruvian Express, Mineral Basin, and Little Cloud chairlifts. The terrain and lifts for the send-off weekend at the end of next week are TBD.

And what about the snow conditions? It’s spring, so if you’re planning to take advantage of Snowbird’s final few days, pack some sunscreen and get ready for slush. The skies are clear today, with a forecast high of 51 degrees.

Snowbird averages over 500 inches of snow per season, but recorded just 305 inches during Winter 25/26 to date.

Snowbird’s looming closure marks an earlier-than-hoped end to Utah’s ski season. The resort, which is known for outlasting other mountains in the state, kept the lifts spinning until Memorial Day weekend in 2025. 

The earlier closing is hardly an unexpected plot twist, though. If anything, it's impressive that Snowbird will even make it as far as May 10. 

As almost every Utah skier knows, this season undershot expectations, sometimes dramatically, as record winter warmth settled in over the state. Then, an intense heat wave in March baked the already-ailing mountain snowpacks, followed by many resorts shutting down.

But Snowbird and a few others hung in there. Now, two resorts alongside Snowbird remain open in Utah: Brian Head and Brighton. Brian Head’s final day of the season is May 3. After a week-long extension, Brighton plans to wrap up the season the same day as Snowbird on May 10. 

So, the final opportunities to ride a chairlift in Utah this season are coming up fast. We suggest soaking up the sun and snow at least one last time if you can swing. There’ll be plenty of time for bikes, golf clubs, and fishing rods—or whatever your off-season sport of choice is—when summer arrives.

Or, if you're a go-getter, there's probably some high altitude snow to be found, even after Brighton and Snowbird close.
