This California Ski Area Has Shut Down For The Season

The Lake Tahoe ski areas have been fighting an uphill battle all winter. Now, one of them has shut down operations for the rest of the season.

Homewood Mountain Resort was originally set to stop the lifts from spinning on Sunday. It pushed that day up to March 17, 2026.

“Mother Nature always gets the final word in the mountains, and this season she’s calling it a little early. Despite our best efforts,  March 17 will be the last day of the 2025-2026 winter season,” the website said. “With unseasonably high temperatures and the forecast showing highs in the 70s through the weekend, our snowpack is rapidly dwindling. The safety of our guests and employees is always our top priority, and the safest option is to close today. We’re proud of our team for creating a great experience during a challenging winter and we’re grateful to everyone who joined us this season.”

Homewood didn’t open up until just before New Year’s weekend. The late start was due to some snowstorms late in December. In total, the resort will have been open for less than three months. Back in the 2024-2025 season, Homewood didn’t open at all after an ownership group attempted to make the resort private.

The resort tried to navigate plans to carry out much-needed to its infrastructure, and ideas of privatizing the mountain were floated. That led to a resounding amount of pushback, and then, a lot of silence.

While riders and skiers might love the old-school vibe at Homewood, there’s a severe need for improvements. With that, the ski area released a plan that offers a 35% discount to full-time West Shore residents, and a 50% season pass discount to local first responders, teachers, and military members. Each of those passes would come with six buddy discounts.
