SLVSH Cup, Explained
This isn’t your usual ski comp. For one, skiers are competing in the SLVSH format, which, to those familiar, is like HORSE in basketball. One person sets a line through the park or an individual trick. If their opponent can’t land it, they get a letter. Whoever ends up with five letters first loses. Those are the basics.
That approach makes for some photo finishes. Years ago, a prolonged, thrilling battle between Quinn Wolferman and Henrik Harlaut ended only after both skiers had amassed four letters. You may have seen that game by now, but if you haven’t, go and watch it—the video’s the ultimate proof of concept for SLVSH.
The format goes further than creating tight competitions, though. It’s far looser than the World Cup or X Games, letting skiers experiment and try tricks you wouldn’t see in a more standardized event. SLVSH, ultimately, takes the best park skiers and dumps them into a pared-down, more relatable format that slowly heats up as the finals approach.
Better Than March Madness
Basketball fans have March Madness, the all-consuming bracket competition based around college basketball. Skiers have the SLVSH Cup. It unfolds over a series of head-to-head competitions that, yes, you can try to predict. This year, the highest overall score on men’s and women’s brackets will win a pair of skis.
We think keeping tabs on the SLVSH Cup is a lot more fun than watching people throw balls at hoops. If you agree, which we hope you do, you can get in on the bracket competition by following this link. All you need to do is make an account and fill out your selections.
